No crank but starter spins
 

I have manual transmission 97 850. my car cut off when I was riding. I tried to crank it while rolling n it didn’t but when I stopped is when I noticed a problem. When trying to start in neutral I can hear the the starter spin but the engine is not turning over. My first thought was the starter was not engaging but then I put the car in gear n tried to start it the car jerked forward and the starter spin but the engine still didn’t try to turn over can someone help me pls

are you sure the engine is not turning over? If you lost your timing belt, you'd have no compression and the engine will spin freely (sounding odd). the car lurching when you tried to start in gear is saying the starter motor is engaging. Pop off the timing belt cover (there's one 12mm bolt in the center then it slides up) to see if all is well.

Take the timing belt cover off and take a look.

If I take the timing belt off should I be able to freespin the water pump pulley or any pulley

Yes all pulley will spin with enough force, but there is no need to take the timing belt off to verify the timing belt is intact. Just take the cover off.

The timing belt came off the water pump pulley n I can’t turn the water pump pulley plus it was sucking up water faster than I could put it in and start driving I’m thinking if it locked up then that’s wat cause the timing belt to come off in the first place

if your timing belt came off with the engine running or you cranked it with the timing belt off, you are going to have bent the exhaust valves as its an interference engine. You will need to pull the head off and either replace the valves or find a used replacement head (check car-parts.com for yards or Craigslist for somebody parting out an NA) - I suppose you can try renting an inspection cam to be 100% certain...

The valves in the cylinder heads are bent.

You need to decide if you want to keep this car or put more $$$ into it.
