No turn signals, high beams, abs/trac lights on

I hope someone can help.I have a1996 850 Turbo with 148,000 miles and it runs great. Suddenlymyturn signals, high beamsdo not work at all, and the abs/trac lights are on (this part has been happening for a long time). I checked this forum, andchanged the electronic segment of the ignition and the problem remains. The fuses are fine, the bulbs etc are fine. Any one have any ideas?

Thanks,

Al

Do the low beams work? What happens when you try to toggle from low to high beams? Does the high beam indicator turn on in the instrument panel?

No, the indicator light does not come on when I go from low to high beams.

Yes the low beams work

If you have a manual for the car (with wiring diagrams) I would just start checking connection points with a multimeter. Start at the fues and make sure you are getting power then work your way forward or backward depending on the results.

Perhaps some relays died?

I will give it a shot - thanks for the idea!!!

Well here is what I have done so far and no luck. Replaced the electronic ignition, cleaned all the contacts in the bulb sockets, checked the power at the fuse block - positive, changed the entire turn signal assembly (found one at a local salvage dealer for 40.00!). Still no luck, does anyone know where the relays are located for the turn signals and high beams?

thanks,

Most of the relays are in the same place as the fuses under another cover or something. Relays are also above the driver's feet, but I'm not sure which relay is which. The wiring diagrams should give you a number for each relay.

I noticed that my TRACS light sometimes goes on when I turn all the way to the left or the right and clears after a while, I'm guessing the ABS speed sensors are the culprit. Check your ABS wheel speed sensors. Not sure if this your case (if its permanently on, then it could be a bad ABS module too).

The ABS controller module on the 96 models is a high failure item. This is probably not
associated with your turn signal/directional problem.

Do the emergency flashers on your car work? As far as I could tell from the wiring diagram
the emergency flashers use the same relay as the directionals (plus a couple more that the
directionals don't use).
I would take a voltmeter and check the switch terminals on the directional/high beam switch
on the steering column. Both the directionals and high beams are routed through this switch.
I know that you said that you replaced this switch but you may have a problem with the wiring
that connects to the switch, or the replacement switch may be bad. It would be unusual for
2 relays that are not related to fail at the same time (unless you have a bad ground or 12v
supply wire). It would be more likely that something that is common to both has failed.
At least by checking the switch at the steering column you will break the problem down into
either a failure in the wiring, the switch, or something that is fed by the switch. This will help
you to avoid replacing a lot of unnecessary parts.

Good luck!

Check out this link I think I might Help. I just had the same problem an hour ago. It sounds like it might be your ignition barrell. It's the "Jiggle the key Fix."

I have the same problem on my 96' 850 GLT, it seems to happen more on not days. I find that giving the steering wheel a bang will make the headlights come on and then a second later the ABS light goes out. I'm thinking its a grounding issue as the fuses are all good. Additional information, the failure includes blinkers, headlights, ABS light (which prevents coming out of park unless you shiftlock override) & sidemirror/rear window defrost(at least the indicator LED). Thoughts?

easy fix

change the ignition switch.. buy it online for around $50, don't get the really cheap one, you'll have a hard time turning your ignition key afterward

theres a good chance its the module on a 96 car, but I don't think this would also affect the lights
