Default Reading wire codes for a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT

I cannot find information about my question. I did find one site online but I could never find it again. I looked hard. I am trying to rule out my MAF sensor as the problem to my car. Error code P0103 came up. MAF sensor or wiring issue. Bought a MM and I do not know what wires to hook up. I also have a Chilton book with wire diagrams but I don't know how to read them. I have 4 wires coming out of the MAF sensor connection. Labeled 1, 2, 3, 4. Line 1 is red/green. Line 2 is brown/white. Line 3 is Green. Line 4 is white.

There must be 50 ways to check a MAF sensor with a MM. Car on, car off, on but not idling, unplugged, plugged, some have even said the Chilton book is wrong. My head is about to explode with all the different ways. I did read that when testing a MAF, the first test is to see if there is voltage coming into it. Also, where to ground? Some say to the frame, or to the negative on the battery, etc. So, what is the easiest way to test the MAF with a MM and which wires to connect to and which leads go where?
