Record MPG!!! 29.95 mpg

80% highway, 20% city driving. I can't believe it. Not sure what I'm doing. Maybe the car sees the $4/gal gas and thinks its time is limited!!! My previous record was 27.5.

I'm thinking about making one of those hydrogen boosters and trying it out for S's & G's.

This reminded me of "I Can't Believe It's NotButter!" kind of product. I hope those peopleare surewhat they're doing:).

What I don't understand about these hydrogen kits is if you are adding a second source of fuel, then how does the computer compensate for that? Does it just put less fuel pressure to the injectors? Or is it that the hydrogen just makes the engine burn the gasoline more efficiently and doesn't affect the amount of fuel being sent to the engine? I'd like to try it too, but I used to have a veggie oil car, and if hooking up a hydrogen kit is anything of a pain in the butt like hooking up a veggie oil kit was then I think I'll pass!

im skeptical. i knew of a guy here in my town who was gonna do one of those water/fuel setups. he made a huge mess in his backyard and driveway with the stuff and as far as his neighbor knew, the car never ran and is now parked in deep grass in the back.

it sounds like snake oil to me.

but thats my opinion.
and... everybody has one and they all itch! [sm=icon_rofl.gif]

I would leave the 850 motors as gasoline-powered (maybe kerosene-powered in some countries where Rudolf unit was available).

H-powered engines, I believe, were still in the labs back in the early 90s. And the only H-powered unit I've seen is Mazda's Wankel unit (there should be more by now).

Should you insist, however, I would contact the national defense dept, EPA, and let your neighbours evacuate while you crank it. And if you see mushroom cloud, well, you would be in a catastrophic trouble.....:(. See attached, don't let this happen to you.

I am fascinated by the European flex fuel Volvos, they seem to run on LPG, CNG, or petrol and any mix of the fuels on the fly. I found an outfit in Argentina that sells a CNG add on kit for our cars for a right price, around $1200.00 (Not EPA approved but screw them).

http://www.mycngkit.com/MyCngKit.Com...and_Truck.html

It is actually fairly simple as it injects CNG ahead of the throttle body. The range is limited but you can change fuel back to gasoline on the fly. I would love to avoid all of the road taxes and the equivalence is about $1.50/gallon with CNG. The problem is with the compressors you need to fill the tank. If I converted all 5 vehicles in the current fleet I could almost justify it but I need to factor in the HD Eibach springs for all of them after a 200 lb. tank gets fitted in the trunk.

That is pretty cool that they sell a kit for CNG! I just wonder if there is any effect on the life of the vehicle? There are 2 places that sell CNG around here for $2 a "gallon". But how far can you drive on a tank? Seems like the tank is fairly large, would really take up a lot of space in a trunk.

Hmmmmm a CNG option for an 850........interesting at the very least

I live in Argentina, and I have a CNG conversion kit on my N/A Hyundai Elantra 1.8 16V DOHC manual tranny. I works pretty well, you lose about 15% power, but save 60% on fuel. The 200 lb tank screws up the rear suspension and uses about half the trunk. It also reduces the life of the IACV.

I don´t think I would use it on a car with automatic transmission or with a turbo though. My brother had his 2.0 Elantra automatic retrofitted with CNG and he was never happy about it.

EDIT: A full tank (12 cubic meters) gives me 130 kms in summer and 160 in winter. That´s highway driving at 110-120 km/h. Once you run out of CNG you can switch back to gasoline.

Hey there,
I have a '93 850 5-speed. I average 29 mpg with mixed backroad/city/highway. Good for us! Simply astounding in a 15 year old car. Gotta love my Volvo!

1995 850 wagon with 161k miles and no turbo. i get 21~22mpg around town and 29~30 on the highway if i keep it under 70 mph.

i still need to replace my breather box and knock sensors. i wonder if mpg will improve much after these items are fixed?

1996 850 5 spd naturally aspirated. 31.5 mpg at 65 mph and 28 mpg at 85 mph, although I just found out today that my thermostat in the air filter housing was stuck in the preheat mode-which I did a quick fix to get it breathing cold air again. It will be interesting to see if I gain a few mpg's out of it. Not bad for a car with 325,000 miles and still runs great.

Rick, I've got a basically identical 95, also over 300,000 miles, but it has the earlier version of the fuel injection. I only get about 25 in city driving. Not bad I guess.
