Seat belts too short

Seat belts too short
Hello all - a first post from across the pond.
My 1996 850 Estate is fitted with standard length seat belts which are too short to accommodate my disabled son. Volvo UK can supply longer belts (about 4inches longer) at a cost of £149.00 each plus a fitting charge of about £100.00.
Whilst skimming through these pages, before I registered, I saw a post from a pregnant lady with the same problem - belt would not fasten.
Tech, you said that an adaptor was available to overcome the problem. Volvo UK do not know of this. Can you point me in the direction of a US supplier, please?
This is my fifth Volvo and the first with this problem. Were they built only for small or average sized people?
This is a great site, I only wish I had found it years ago!
Regards to all on your side of the pond.
Bill.

RE: Seat belts too short
Bill,
PM me with an email address and I'll send you what I have. I tried to PM you with it but it's too big. I think you need something called Seat Belt Extender type D. It looks like a long bracket that has the seat buckle on the end of it. I don't see a part number listed for it. I can't believe Volvo UK would charge for these, let alone $300-400!!! They should be free in my opinion.

RE: Seat belts too short
I think both of the solutions you suggest would certainly work. It's just a shame that he'd have to pay for them. I used to have some extensions for a old Mercury Grand Marquis we had. The belt buckle was so short it would disappear into the opening for it in the seat cushion and you could never find it to buckle. I searched my garage for them but I'm afraid I threw them out when we got rid of the car. The extensions worked great though. The bulletin I have is from Volvo US. It would only give a few extra inches to the belt by using the metal bracket as the extension. I just thought if he had the right paperwork from Volvo he might be able to get the extension for free.

RE: Seat belts too short
Thank you to everybody who has helped.
In my original post I probably did not make it clear that the cost was for complete seat belts. I have checked again with my local dealer who in turn checked with Volvo UK and they have no knowledge of seat belt extenders. They will only recommend the new belts as they have done no tests on extenders. Amazing the differences that have become apparent between Volvo US and Volvo UK. Our lot don't seem to want customers!
I have taken lanciak69's advice and ordered an extender from his source on eBay.
Again, thanks to everybody. I shall update this when I can belt my son in.
