Default Serious Manifold parts issue causeing nightmares!

My parents sold me their Volvo 850 last year, they had had it for 8 years with no probs (Im 26 years old by the way).

I had only one major problem, the clutch went at 100,000 miles... I realised it was close to an end and had it replaced.

4 months later My exhaust manifold has blown a crack in it.. slightly shocked I made the order for a new one..

BUT THERE ARE NONE in the WORLD! (new to purchase)... seriously call around if someone can find me one I will love you forever..

Its not the one with the mesh surround at the end that connects to the rest of the exhaust system....
its an older style one that appears to be causing issues for Volvo and they are not keeping any stock..

the back log has been going on since June according to my dealer, now over 100 people waiting worldwide!!!!!! 30 in the UK

Apparently it a known issue as they are breaking just after the "webbed" design finished where most strain is placed.

Part number 1271814
Fits engine 585600 onwards
Engine B5252FS 2 valve 1994 onwards.

Im left feeling very disappointed that volvo have made me immobile for an indefinite period of time, the cars only 12 years old/100,000 miles whilst its not a young car it is compaired to the general stock of parts.

Finally does anyone know of anywhere on the net discussing this problem at all, I feel its an issue that needs to be made more aware particularly between volvo owners, even my dealer expressed serious concern over Volvos attitude towards this problem.

Anything.. will be very appreciated.

Perhaps try a breaker?

There's a number of 850s being broken down for spares on ebay at the moment as well.

Ive had a good look... nothing

its a really crazy experience, would anyone know whether you can install the newer version of the exhaust system onto this car? Has anyone done this? I feel my options are very limited.

I know this is probably not what you want to do. However have someone make you a custom manifold.

If there is a shortage of these manifolds it might be the best way to get back on the road.

Have them make it better then the stock one, but more to stock specs.

Are you in the UK? If so, two links for you to check out. I have used both for various models of Volvo and they are first class.

Can the old one be welded back together?

Cannot weld, crack too severe.

Tried those sites.. thank you very much trying the parts gateway, although so far no luck..

Has anyone got any idea how much of the exhaust needs changing? Do I need a new CAT or can I just get a new downpipe?

Thanks for your help so far.. really appreciated!!!!

What about FCP? They've got manifolds and cat converters for 850's.

Well, I ve been searching like mad, I have to say Volvo have made it very difficult, after inspection by a volvo dealer they have come to the conclusion that its a faulty part as the new manifold rectifies this..

oh and last thing, if your Volvo is over 8 years old, due to change of manufacturer of supplies volvo have told me a car over 8 years old will be much more difficult to get supplies for as only new stock is being created now.

Is there no pattern parts available?

I know for a fact that the garage I use doesn't fit Volvo parts to my car.

I have heard many negative reviews about ScanTech.

Why are you attached to the idea of using the original style exhaust manifold? If I understand correctly you have a 2.4L I5 engine. Why not use a newer style exhaust manifold from something like a 1997 850 or 1998 S-70? They should be plentiful in most salvage yards. Then you would have flex-pipe which would prevent any problems with cracking your new manifold.

Would a newer style manifold from 5254 engine fit THE ENGINE SIDE of your 5252 engine? If yes, then get aftermarket one (about $280) and get aftermarket catalytic converter(about $300).

If the answer to above is NO, then get rid of the car...

Hi,

Thanks so much for your help, I looked into the newer FLEX style exhaust, with the volvo dealers and their service team however they felt the job would not be possible due to mouinting and fitting of pipes.

HOWEVER!!! I got a call from my dealer yesterday, according to the main serivice manager who i am dealing with Volvo customer services have "located" a new manifold and are drelivering it today.

So Ive jumped the cue maybe? who knows.... I'll let you know if all goes well.
