Squeeling Disk Brakes

Hey guys a quick question here. on my mothers volvo 850 GLE has had the pads and rotors changed a few times and the last time was done with the OEM volvo stuff.. and not matter what we do they tend to sound like a truck is stopping when we brake... usually from the rear. but im sure the front ones do also. its not like the squeeling of worn down brake pads... more like as i said the sound of a truck stopping ...or a bus.

any help would be great.
thanks.

RE: Squeeling Disk Brakes

Here's what I usually do:

1. Clean the entire assembly thoroughly with a can of brake cleaner spray (Try not to inhale the stuff, it's strong enough to melt a styrofoamdish)
2. Replace pads & rotors with OEM, as you did already.
3. Use half-size shims for the rear pads.
4. This is what I found through experiment: Apply CV-joint grease or any molybdenum-based brake grease on all metal-to-metal contact areas between the pads & piston/caliper, EXCEPT the friction surfaces. In my case, this eliminated the high-pitched squealing permanently. Silicone-based brake quiet compound also seems to work just as well, but generic brake-quiet stuff doesn't seem to do a trick on 850's rear brakes.

Some examples (the 1st is the one I used; CRC (Sta-Lube) CV-Joint Grease SL3174B):

Lastly, make sure that the pad retainer spring is in good condition.

thanks alot man.. ill definately try the cv grease.. i would assume it is some of the mechanical parts such as the calipers anyways dueto the fact that the pads are brand new.

My pleasure. Also, be easy on the brakes for the first 100 miles/160 kms or so.

I'm writing from Japan, so my replies would be posted at strange times.

Yes I did. I hope it would be of some use for you. I believe other members are still asleep or just starting to wake up, as my clock for U.S Eastern time zone is indicating 7:40AM.

I'd bet it'sthe shims in the back. Go to the dealer and ask for half shims for the rear pads....my sister's car had the most horrendous squeeling I've ever heard from the rear brakes, and OEM pads with half shims cured it completely. No fancy grease or other gunk in there for me.
