Station Wagon Top Trim

The two trim strips on the roof edge of my new 850 wagon are covered with a black plastic. The plastic has started to come off the strips. Can replacement of these strips be a driveway project? My car mechanic skills are about a 7.0.

Thanks

Ray

You can buy them from Volvo for $150 per side.

Or you can try to find some decent ones in a junk yard, good luck.

Or you could pell the plastic off and paint them or use black electrical tape. Yes tape. A guy in Alaska did it and said it worked.

Wouldn't the sun kill that tape quickly?

The best trick I've heard is to pull them off, chuck up some ScotchBrite on a buffer pad, or a drill, or an angle grinder and buff the old flaking stuff off and then paint them with bumper paint. You can paint the rubber moldings right along with the aluminum rails. I guess the bumper paint is flexible and it won't crack.

The pictures I've seen after the procedurelook great.

Yes the trim can be done.

The proceduere looks fairly simple but may take some time. Well, is that not what Saturday is for?

Electrical tape, I work for an adhesive tape manufacturer, would not last very long as the adhesive is not designed for that type of exposure to the heat that a good summer day can provide. It would begin to lift in no time flat and with the first good rain you would be fussing and fighting with it to keep it in place.

If you are up to it, try the fix provided in the link and tell/show us your results.
