Default stereo install kits?

so im looking around online for a kit, and all i can find are the 'regular' sized ones.

my 850 has a larger stereo than im used too, its at least 5" tall. ive seen kits that are for 'normal' (DIN1 i believe) stereos, but i cant seem to locate one that will allow for the install of one of these stereos without leaving a gaping hole in the center of my car.

anywhere in particular i should look?

If you want a single DIN one than you get that and they sell a piece that slides in the left over space and it's a small "shelf". If you want a double DIN head unit, then get that and that will take up the whole space. Go to Crutchfield and they sell everything you need.

http://www.crutchfield.com/g_112200/...s.html?tp=3121

This is what you need if you get a single din unit, and this takes up the other din.

Sorry, but the shotty computer I'm on won't allow to me edit my post and add these things. But this is what the mounting kit looks like installed, obviously my stereo isn't in there because the only interior picture I have is from when my car was broken into, but you get the idea.

What do you mean? Are you putting in new amps or just a head unit? If your just doing a head unit all have to do is the get the appropriate wire harness and it just plugs in, that's it.

i want to just put in a new head unit and keep all the speakers running. my understanding is theyre all amplified, though ive yet to locate the factory amp(s).

most, if not all stereos, wont support 6 speakers. i realize im probably going to lose 2, but if i can help it, id like to try and keep all 6 running.

You'll keep all six running. Almost everyone has an aftermarket system in there car and don't forfeit speakers. The rear speakers in 850's (driver door/driver deck and passenger door/passenger deck) are wired in a parallel, so there are the same amount of wires that there would be with a car that only had 4 speakers.

But that's besides the point. Most 850's don't have 6 speakers, they have 8, and compared to new cars today, that isn't very many speakers. Most of the new Volvo's have 12 if not more. That's what wiring harness does, it takes the vehicle's wiring and adapts it to work/fit into an aftermarket system. You won't lose any speakers. I've actually never heard of people getting an aftermarket head unit and losing speakers. I have an aftermarket head unit and all 6 of my speakers work.

well yeah i know you have 8 including the front tweeters. that begs another question since i probably wont lose all of my speakers: since the rear door speakers are 8ohm speakers, im assuming that the rear deck speakers are also the same and are both wired down to 4ohms.

when i replace the speakers, will 4ohm speakers work, or am i going to have to get 2ohm speakers and wire them up to 4ohms?

third, i cant find the actual DIN kit for a single DIN stereo (on crutchfield). all i can locate on there is the pocket that goes underneath. any help on that, or am i going to have to turn to ebay? id rather get both in the same place vs 2 different outlets.

many thanks for your answers!

Your front speakers are all on different circuits, so 4 ohm speakers work up front. If you want to rewire your rear speakers, you should use 8 ohm speakers and once wired into a parallel they will be 4 ohm speakers, but 8 ohm speakers are expensive, as I didn't even find any in the top of my price range that I wanted to spend.

What do you mean you can't find the actual din kit? That pocket takes the place of the left over DIN after you install a single DIN head unit.

well, im assuming when you remove the factory stereo, you cant just slide a single DIN unit in there. you need a mounting kit so it doesnt just fall all the way down.

the pocket kit would cover up the empty space resulting from a single DIN installation, but would not do anything to keep the stereo from moving around.

when i installed an aftermarket stero into my brick, its single DIN and only required a kit for the radio to slide into, no pocket.

If you go to crutchfield, go to "outfit my car", select your car, and then choose what stereo you want. They include all the hardware needed to install your stereo.

yeah, ive been beating my head up over this. i did exactly that. it only lists the pocket kit when i select my car, not the actual kit for the stereo.

ebay has like 2 kits, though im leery of buyin a kit from ebay.

may just end up going to custom sounds and having them order it for me.

If your talking about that sleeve that slides into the DIN and then the head unit slides into that, that's included with the head unit.

I copied and pasted this from one of the single din head units.....

What's in the box?

Download owner's manual

* Pioneer Premier AM/FM/CD receiver with 10-amp ATM mini fuse inserted into chassis
* Face
* Sleeve
* Trim ring
* Wiring harness

That sleeve is what slides into the empty space, you bend the tabs to lock it in place, and then the head unit slides and locks into that.

no, im talking about the piece that the sleeve slides into.

radio > sleeve > plastic mounting piece sleeve slides into.

i was looking into just getting something like this:: http://cgi.ebay.com/Volvo-850-1993-1...d=p4999.c0.m14

That's just the plastic pocket kit that slides into the extra DIN!!!!

I think your trying to find a piece that doesn't exist. If you do the "OUTFIT MY CAR" on crutchfield, everything is included that you need to install your stereo and cover up the left over DIN. Ask me how I know.
