Stereo problems

Hi, sorry if this is a repost, but my right speakers crackle and don't fully project sound. It seems to crackle the most when I turn the volume knob. It doesn't seem like the speaker is blown, but just some bad wiring. I do some basic mechanic work, but I have never messed around with car audio, or even thought about removing the stereo. I drive a '94 850 turbo wagon. Can anyone help me out with the basics of taking the stereo out and checking speaker wires?

thanks, abe

If it's all of the speakers on the right-side, it could be the wiring harness or it could be the contacts on the volume knob.

The wiring harness connects to the back of the radio. To get to it, just depress (about an 8th of an inch 'till you hear/feel a click) the two thin 'strips' along the lower sides of the radio. Those will pop out and they are actually little handles you can use to pull the radio straight out. If you disconnect all of the harnesses from the back, you'll need your radio code to make it work again. Don't have the code? Gotta go to a dealer so they can look it up. It could be that the contacts in the speaker harness just need to be cleaned. Hopefully it’s not the wires that are going bad.

If it’s the volume knob, you’ll have to disassemble the radio and use some electrical cleaner on the ‘internals’. There’s some write-ups on how to crack it open to change out the light bulbs that you can use as a reference.
