strange noise when turning right
really strange problem started happening when I turn my 850 right and right only..
I get a very loud hum/whir... any thoughts |
RE: strange noise when turning right
Does this happen all the time? Slow or fast?
How far does the wheel have to be turned to make that sound? |
RE: strange noise when turning right
both slow and fast.. more fast then slow.. its fairly constant.
the wheel only needs to be turned a few inches to notice... I have already checked the wheel well from obstructions.. or loose inner fender.. but it doesnt sound like plastic |
RE: strange noise when turning right
I want to say wheel bearing but it doesn't sound obvious.
Check the tightness of the lug bolts. Jack up the front right wheel, turn the wheel to the right and spin the tire by hand. Also, pull on the wheel to see if there is any play. |
RE: strange noise when turning right
Also make sure the Axle nut is torqued properly.
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
will check..
thanks |
RE: strange noise when turning right
lugs and axle nut were tight.. any other thoughts?
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
Did you get a chance to spin the tire by hand in neutral w/ wheel turned to the right?
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
Maybe Bad wheel bearing.
|

well no sound.. I turned the wheel to the right and tried.. nothing either. How would I check for a wheel bearing? The car also needs a balance.. as I am getting a vibration from the front.. or this vibration might be from the noise? |
RE: strange noise when turning right
The wheel bearing usually makes a humming noise when it goes bad.
Make sure all bushings and swaybar links are good. |
RE: strange noise when turning right
I'm tempted to agree with Tech ; wheel bearing
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
VERY EASY to check wheel (hub) bearing. Simply jack up the front of the car, with the transmission in neutral, take one hand and hold on to the spring while spinning the wheel with your other hand. If you feel any slight vibration, it's bad or going bad. A good hub bearing, you would not be able to feel anything on the spring. Also, check your CV joints just in case if you suspect the axle.

RE: strange noise when turning right
I had the hubs done by my dealer three years ago when I bought the car...
any idea on how long these last... should I even bother talking to the dealer.? |

RE: strange noise when turning right
no its deff not a clunk.. the boots looked good and intact... its a metalic whir... and the more i think about it it sounds like my jeep hubs when they go bad..(that I offroad):D
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
Well, Could be a bad hub bearing then. Check that first.
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
How about the tires?
They aren't feathered bad are they? |
RE: strange noise when turning right
tires are actually feathered and irregularly worn..
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
That would cause the noise as well.
If the backs are better try swapping then driving and see if the noise is gone. |
RE: strange noise when turning right
Maybe climate control fan?
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
Check your brakes as well, if they're running low or the brake pad hardware is damaged causing the pad the touch the rotor when you're turning right.
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
ORIGINAL: yurionel Maybe climate control fan? thats interesting... why that? |
RE: strange noise when turning right
Believe it or not I was getting a noise from the blower motor fan while only turning right! The way I figured it out is to completely turn off the climate control (fan to OFF, switch the mode off of auto on ECC). Presto the noise went away. Replaced the blower motor and the noise has not returned.

RE: strange noise when turning right
I pinpointed this to the right front ball joint on the A arm... there was also a slight tear in the CV boot so im replacing that as well... might have a busy day tomorrow with this..
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
Glad you finally tracked it down.
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
yeah its amazing how many things make noise on a volvo:D
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
AGREED
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
ok, here is the update.. still the same problem.
I dropped the volvo off at my local volvo guy and he was the one who diagnosed the ball joint and torn axle boot. I replaced both on the passenger side, used a rebuild axle and new control arm, they were both bad! I also got 4 new tires, balanced and alligned. I drive several cars so I had not put any real miles on the volvo in a while. Today the noise happened again, I dont think it ever went away actually..... So I guess I'm back at square one... still the same noise, a metalic whirr.hum while turning right??? Possbly the driver side balljoint is bad as well? I just hate to start throwing parts at the car not knwoing whats going on. I also cant see how its a hub bearing, both fo them were replaced less than 30K ago by the dealer and looked fine upon inspection. Front struts are also only a year old. My brakes do squeel a bit, but I never drove an older volvo that didnt. Im fighting a loosing battle here... please chime in.[:o] |
RE: strange noise when turning right
Greetings from Chicagoland.
Sorry to hear your problem, especially after spending $$$ to replace expensive Volvo parts. I think many of us have been there. The hub bearing is probably ok, my 850 has 14,4000 miles with the original hubs and they are still fine. Have you checked the power steering for fluid level and any leak from the rack boots, as well as the condition of serpentine belt? How about upper strut mounts/spring seats? I once had a loose bumper bolt and the car was making high-pitch noise (sort of like little birds singing). I wish you luck in finding the actual culprit. Regards, JPN |
RE: strange noise when turning right
Hi! I am from Spain and drive a '98 V70 T5 (mechanically same as a 850). I have found this post due to a extrange noise I am also having when turning right. I will try to describe the sound:
-It is like a.. TTZTZTZZTZTZTZ -It sometimes sounds continous (TZTZTZTZZZTTZZTZ), and other times just "chopped" (TZTZ TTZ TZTZTZZT) -It does not sound "mechanical", it is speed independent, its pitch/frecuency/tone does not change with vehicle speed -It only sounds when turning right -I believe that it only sounds after pushing the engine quite hard -It looks like being linked someway to the turbo air aspirating sound. Does this match your sound rejeep ? is your car a turbo ? |
RE: strange noise when turning right
no,
being related to speed I feel like your noise would be the tires rubbin on something.. mine is deff a metalic sound.. metal against metal. Is has stopped with a lot in its frequnecy, but its till there when turning right. im convinced its something in the suspention.. might be the other ball joint, bu the mechanic said that the driver side was fine. only other thing, could it be the brakes? I have pleanly of matirial left on mine, but they do suqeel something fierce. |
RE: strange noise when turning right
mine is not speed related..
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
brake dust shield hitting something...?
no mine is not turbo |
RE: strange noise when turning right
Is it loud or soft?
|
RE: strange noise when turning right
no its fairly loud...
Im starting to think it might be comming form the rear wheels...? I also can faintly hear it when tracking strait down the road sometimes... |
