Timing Belt - Mismatch
 

Hi, this is after a full day of labour/travelling to different part sources including two stealerships after removing my timing belt and discovering that the timing belt I got is not the same length or number of teeth. For now, the old belt is back in just to get my wheels for christmas.

The original timing belt that came off the engine has 144 teeth and has got a volvo stamp on it. Where as the belt(s) i got from 'partsource', 'collins' and one of the dealership has 148 teeth but their system only shows one kind of belt for these cars. As a result I have ended up doing a complete labour that is needed for doing the timing belt but still have the old belt (100K kms on it) driving my engine.
Can someone please comment on this if they have ever experienced this.

PS - The width of all the belts that i tried is same (so, mine is not the 93 kind) and the only differnece I can tell you about is that my engine seems to be without EGR and also it doesnt have the tubing going under the plastic cover on the topjust beside the oil filler cap as I can see on other volvos around me.

Is yours a 10valve or a 24 valve motor?

I thought on the 24 valve motors the 93's were one belt and the 94 and up were all the same belt.

Mine is 20 Valve and I am aware of the narrower timing belt on 93's but in this case its not narrow but just little shorter (144teeth as compared to 148 on normal ones)

EDIT on above post it was late and I meant 20 valve not 24 valve.

That is very strange about the belts. I have never ran into it before.

I spoke to a person on 'swedish auto parts' (the link on the top of this website) this morning and surprisingly, after taking the full vin# (unlike last 6 digits as delerships did) he could check the volvo database and confirmed even the serial number of my engine and also that it is not a 5234 or 5254but a 5252 engine. I will check with dealership on coming working day if this can help them anyway.
Please put in your views if this makes any sense to you.

If it is indeed the 5252 then you have the 10 valve motor and the timing belt must be different.

Just did my belt today, 5252s, (10 valve) belt is 144.......

Mystery solved. I never realised that my engine is 10 valve because I was thinking that 10 valve engine might look different from the 20 valve on the top side. But they are very identical.

Stupid of me that I never got a though of checking this info on the beltcover.

Zoright.

You don't normally associate twin cam (DOHC) labeled motors as 'only' being two valves per cylinder.
Mine has DOHC on the spark cover, and it is a DOHC, Just happens to be 'missing' a few valves :D

Interesting that the quad valve motors have a longer belt, I wonder why ??????????

Really sucks that you did all that work without being able to finish the job in one go.
I was worried I might get the wrong belts too, so I spun the engine and read the numbers of the existing belts with as little pull down as possible.

Mine is a late 96 S as well. In my caseI never suspected it to be very different but also the numberson the existing belt are so faded and worn out that it probably wouldnt have helped anyways even if I would have tried to read them before a teardown. I am glad that I didnt damage the belt while pulling it out otherwise i would have had Christmas without wheels (one way to comsole myself..LOL).

Just to update:

Finally, Got the right timing belt today from a local Dealership and it is IN. Mine is a 5252S motor which according to dealership is only CANADIAN version. It is a 10 valve DOHCmotor.

What else did you replace and do you find the engine quieter now ?

I just did belts, idlers, water pump, and find the engine is so quiet now I can hear the injectors ticking....
