Timing problems

Hey

I changed my water pump in my 1995 850 T5-R. I tried to set the timing
by removing the distributor cap and the cam sensor then followed the video on aligning the slot in the cams with the slit in the block. That was easy. When I got to the "Sensor rotor plate" and the "Rotor arm mounting plate" I was unsure how to mount them. Each of them have two little ears used to guide them into position on there respective camshafts. My problem is each of these pieces can fit into place two ways that are opposites. Take the "Sensor rotor plate". Its a half circle. When installed its on one side of the cam or if you spin it over its on the other side of the cam. It can't possible work both ways, One side or the other before they get bolted in. My question is can you put them in the wrong way?
The car turns over fine but doesn't start. It sounds and feels like it's just about to start but doesn't. Is there any documentation around that shows the correct assembly method?

They should only go on one way.

They are intended to go one way only. You have to put them on like somebody who is trying to put them on the right way. The best way. If you really look at them you'll see how they're indexed, and you can tell from that which way is "right".

It may be possible to attach them wrong, but don't.
