TRACS Option

Hello,
My 95' 850 turbo has that TRACS buttom/switch. I have snow on my street, and today I stopped my car, put it into park, and then put TRACS on. I then gave it a little gas to see if there was a difference in the snow. It spun anyway, and there was kinda a really quite, fast ticking noise. I assume that is just the sound of it trying to gain traction. Anyway, right away, and when I pulled into my driveway, the car kinda smelt a little burnt. Almost like brakes or clutch. Could this be because it was trying to prevent spinning and it couldn't?

-Thanks

RE: TRACS Option

I think I may be wrong. I just read on the forum that when the light is on, on the TRACS button, traction control is off. Is this true?

For my car, Light on, Tracs was on.

I got a little rumble, and it felt like something electronic.

From the 1995 owner's manual:

A - TRAction Control System (TRACS) - option

TRACS is a system designed as an aid when starting/driving off if one of the drive wheels has poor traction due to weather conditions or the road surface and is connected to the ABS control module.
TRACS is switched on manually with a button on the dashboard. The indicator lamp in the button will light up when the system is ON. With the button in the ON position, TRACS activates automatically if one of the front wheels loses traction, shifting power to the wheel with best traction.
A sound from the ABS control module may be audible at this time. The system functions only at speeds under 25 mph (40 km/h).

From the 1996 owner's manual:

A - TRAction Control System (TRACS) - option

TRACS is a system designed as an aid when starting/driving off if one of the drive wheels has poor traction due to weather conditions or the road surface and is connected to the ABS control module.
TRACS engages automatically at sppeds below 25 mph (40km/h) when one of the drive wheels loses traction. It disengages automatically when speed exceeds 25 mph (40 km/h). The sound which can be heard when the system is operating comes from the ABS system.
TRACS can be disengaged manually using the switch on the dashboard. The indicator light will come on.

In the '95 write-up TRACS is switched on manually and the light is lit. In the '96 write-up TRACS is on until the switch is pressed to de-activate it.

I have a '95 registered, '96 model. TRACS is engaged until I press the switch.

It looks like a different system may have been introduced between '95 and '96.

RE: TRACS Option

Bill is right. The system changed in 96 to on unless turned off (light on system off, light off system on). Same for my 02 S60.

The 1995 light on traction on.
Same in my R.
You won't really feel it either because the ABS puts pressure on the wheels when it works.
I cant feel mine working unless I rest my foot on the brake pedal when teh wheels are spinning.
