Default Tried everything to fix keyless entry

I have a 'new' 1997 Volvo 850. Red and beautiful. I wished my keyless entry worked. I have read every post on every forum I could find.
Here is what I have done so far:
1. Reprogrammed by on/ off 5 times and push remote button, light on dash blinks .... nothing.
2. Checked batteries, they are fine.
3. Checked fuses - all fine.
4. Held remote to my chin ( and other body parts ) ... nothing.[:@]

Next I plan to remove glove box ( or under steering wheel ) and locate the remote sensor ( I think that is whatit is called ). Not sure what I will do when I locate it. Probably dust it off and try to reprogram...

Could someone tell me what their next move(s) would be. Trying to stay away from dealership if at all possible.
THANKS.

Thanks, Shagin. Where would I find these aftermarket systems? What features?

These forums are great for information!

Was the remotekeyfob original to the car? The eBay sellers list replacements as working for '93 to '97 but on the standard remote system there are two versions and they are not compatible.

Not really sure. The car key was on the keyfob so I assumed so. Are there #s to check? Where would they be. Probably on the remote and on the remote sensor. Thanks for your help.

Hello OKC_Dave,

On the back of the key fobis aseries ofreally tiny numbers.

I haveasked this question before as both of my fobs have the little rubber pads worn and seem to always unlock the car but is temperamental with locking the car.

My understanding with the fobs from eBay is that the numbers on the back must match. While Im not sure how accurate this is there is also the controller behind the glovebox, if Im not mistaken - Ill look for the earlier answers I got back when, that can be ckecked.

There are others here that will have more knowledge and be of better assistance. Just give them a chance to chime in and youll be good to go in no time.

Thanks Quick,

My fob seems to be really worn and there are no numbers. There is a rectangle area on the back by battery hole that looks like it may have had a sticker on it. No numbers in plastic housing.

I tried everything when my keyless entry stopped working for my '97 850 T5: I changed the battery, tried to reprogram it, and took it to an independent Volvo mechanic. I finally took it to the dealer and they reprogrammed it without a problem!

Thanks Old850,

I may end up doing that if I don't have some success on my own soon. What is different about the T5 from the base model??

2 things
1. When you press the button does the remote make a noise like an electrical clicking not just from the button it is the electrical part making noise?
2. When you lock the car with the key does the red light on the dash flash? Or when you tried to program it did the Led work?

Hi tech,

1. No - the remote does NOT beep or make any noise when buttons are pushed.
2. Yes - the red LED light does blink when doors are locked w/ key. Alarm system works.

Thanks for your help

Since you have the tall skinny remote they are supposed to make noise when you press the button.
Also if you live close to a Dealer they have a tool that they test the remote on and see if it works. I will bet the remote is bad.
Most of the time the Parts Dept has the tool and will test for free.

Thanks tech,

I'll go to the dealer and have them check it out. I have the 2 button remote. Not sure if that is the 'tall skinny' one or not...

Thanks for the info.

Are the buttons up and down or side by side?

Well, the dealer said remote is good, puts out a signal. Talked to a tech, he said he thought it had to be programmed w/ software at the dealership.
I guess I'll dig in and look at the sensor.
Back to square one.

Thanks for your help though. I plan to put in the odometer gear this weekend. I've found the documentation for that. It looks like a fairly easy job.

When you turn the key on and off 5 times and leave it on does the LED do anything?
Also you might want to make sure it is an 850 remote.
Did it work at one time?

Sorry these might have been answered before.

I know on very few cars there was a special tool needed. But I have never heard of software needed to do it. That's a new one to me.
