Trouble code 1-1-4 ???

Hi!

My check engine light came on in my "95 850 GLT, and I checked the diagnostic codes at terminal block A. I got a 2-2-3 code, but I also got a 1-1-4 code. I know what the 2-2-3 code is for, but I cannot find a 1-1-4 code anywher in any list of codes. I have checked numerouse sites o th eweb, plus my Chilton repair manual, and 1-1-4 does not exsist??

Has anyone else had this code and have any idea what it is???

Which # did you pull the 114 codes from If you pulled it from A-1.Then it is a transmission code.114=Program selector open-circuit or short-circuit to supply.

I've pulled the same code (114) from the A1 block. I also found exactly what you said

114=Program selector open-circuit or short-circuit to supply.
Now what does that mean in english?

The only issue with my tranny right now is that it tends to downshift when I didn't think it was required going uphil, but then refuses to shift again for a min or two.

That means the Park nuetral position switch is bad (PNP) on the transmission.

great... well it's better than knowing the trans is going to fall out of my car.

Well I looked into the PNP switch, but if that switch had failed wouldn't my tranny be giving more codes than just 1-1-4, perhaps a 3-1-3? It would also seem that since the PNP switch is also called the neutral safety switch that I wouldn't be able to put it into gear by having my key in position II (engine not running) and break depressed. I'm not sure. I'm just trying to probe different scenarios before spending about $100 dollars on a part that I hope I don't need.

It doesn't always set the 313 code. That switch tells the computers which gear the car is in.So it won't stop it from coming out of gear or anything like that.Im 99.9% sure the PNP is bad.

Well you haven't given me bad advice yet, and I would like to think it is an electrical issue instead of the tranny getting ready to drop out of my car, so off to get a new PNP switch!

While I've got my head buried in my engine compartment is there anything else I should give a quick look at that might be related to this issue?

I don't think so.Just make sure all the wiring and everything is good.

In my quest for more information on this PNP switch, and the associated problems I came across a few people saying that "rowing" the shifter can clean the contacts internal to the PNP switch thus ending the problems. This cheap (a feature that I like), but before I go down that path, is this method recommended, or should I quit being cheap and just fix it with a new switch?

I am new to the Volvo world, with that in mind...

On other cars that I've owned, I have cleaned contacts on electrical switches -- headlight, power window, etc -- with TV tuner cleaner.

Wouldn't that be a more permenant way to clean PNP switch, than moving the shifter back and forth?

From what I have found you cannot gain access to the contacts themselves, thus preventing the use of contact cleaner.

You could try that but not sure if it will work.
