Turbo

Hi,
I have a volvo 850 with a turbo... Yesterday I was driving down the street going about 20mph... I accelerated a little bit and then all of a sudden I heard a clanking noice. At first I belived it was an engine problem but I drove a little farther down the street and when I tried to accelate the car almost seemed that it was wobeling. I talked to my father who suggested that the noice was the transmission. Today we were driving in the car when we noticed that the car was not shaking like it was before but now noticed that the turbo meter never moved. Then as we were driving the car stopped the engine at 55mph and then started back again... Any advise will help... thanks

I would check all the hoses really good.
Is the check engine light on?

RE: Turbo

i checked all the hoses and there was one that was messed up which went to the turbos and i taped it up... does it need a new piece of pipe? The check engine light has been on for a while but while i was driving it today i noticed that the arrow light looked like it flickered on a little bit but for all i know it might be irrelivent...
Thanks for all the advise... keep it coming

RE: Turbo

If the hose is messed up get a new hose and replace it.

RE: Turbo

RE: Turbo

Also what would cause the transmission to sound weird before the turbo pipe was fixed? Thanks for all your help it is saving me time and money by not going to a shop...

RE: Turbo

You shouldn't need the entire pipe unless the pipe is messed up. There is a small rubber hose connecting the metal pipe to the turbo.

What kind of noise does the trans. make?

If the hose has a hole in it that will make noise. You will be loosing boost.

RE: Turbo

The engine is making a noice that just seems like the engine is stopping and then reengiging. The hose that had the hole/crack in it was taped up with duct tape. What could have been the sound that I heard when I accelerated up from 20mph. Also the last question I have is that the car seems to boost as normal but the guage does not move at all any clue why that could have happened?

RE: Turbo

Did the noise go away after taping the hose?

Do you hear a vaccum noise inside the car?

motorman149 Jun 26, 2007 05:43 PM

RE: Turbo

It does kindof sound like a vacuum but it sounds the same way when the engine is accelerating all the time even before this incident. Even after taping the pipe up the noice of a dead engine still happens.

RE: Turbo

Is the check enigne light on?

Maybe the hose for the guage in the dash got disconnected somehow.

RE: Turbo

the check engine light is on but it has been on for almost the whole life of the car. Would I be able to see if the pipe got disconnected from the guage?

RE: Turbo

If you remove the lower dash panel on the drivers side you should see a white hose under the dash that goes to the turbo guage.

Get the codes pulled from the system.
Here is how you pull the codes follow instructions in the link.

That is if you have the box under the hood by the washer fluid fill.
