Turbo & overfilled engine oil - no start?
 

I was out in the cold & dark the other night and overfilled the oil. I know this can ruin the turbo. I had to move the car back down the driveway to the parking area, and shift it once to get another car out.

Today it cranked but would not start. Around 32 deg F, battery tester says battery is not as good as it should be.

Put it on the charger for some hours, won't start even with charger connected.

Tell me this has nothing to do with ruining the turbo due to too much oil...

How much is to much?

If the car does not start check the 5 vital signs. If you check compression and it's low across the board, put about 1 once of oil into each hole then crank it till it starts. Common problem with Volvo's that are not driven very far.

You should be able to fill the crankcase up all the way to the valve cover and still start the engine. On the engine in the 850s they have no idea how much oil you have over full and should still crank and fire even if overfilled.

What did you hear about too much oil ruining the turbo ??

It's more likely just a bad case of coincidence rather than cause and effect. You need to check for spark and fuel.

over filling oil has nothing to do with the car not starting. why dont you try getting a secondary battery and see if that would help with it before you go spending money?

Try to pull any CEL codes. You won't be able to tell if the light is tripped unless the engine starts. If it's 95 or earlier, use the port under the hood. If not, use a scanner. The OBDII port is under the coin holder below the ashtray in the 850s. It could be a sensor gone bad. Possibly the cam or crank sensor since they help control most of the function of the engine and the timing of the ignition. No signal means no spark or fuel.

Even if the turbo was locked up and could not spin the car could still start. So dont worry about the Turbo, its not the cause.
