water pipe under exhaust manifold...how to remove
 

Been about a week since i've done any work on the engine...was trying to figure out what i was gonna do about the turbo and new ecu for non egr. I think i've got that cleared up now, and am planning on sending my turbo out for a rebuild.

Also been taking in a bunch of my parts into work and sand blasting them. I'm thinking i may paint them so less chance of them rusting in the future. also thinking of doing that to the block depending on how much of it i take apart.

Hopefully on thursday, i'm gonna get back into that part... gonna get the oil pan and valve cover off, and maybe take the head apart. I still need to 1) get my timing belt off, and make sure i know how to mark it... I understand the cam timing marks, but don't know about the crank marks...haven't seen any marks so far, but the drivebelt pulley is still on.

Other thing was that big water pipe at the rear of the engine, under the exhaust mani... how do you remove that?

Once the screws are out the pipe should slide out of the back of the water pump ports.

don't think you have to worry about the block rusting

i never found my crank mark, try as i did. i put a rod in #1 cylinder and watched it move exactly across TDC as the cam timing lines crossed their marks.

This photo may or may not help. With the engine out like I did here you will see a mark on the block and a slightly noticeable notch in the crank gear. Once my cam marks lined up the mark was pretty obvious on the crank gear. I highlighted the mark and the notch on mine with a white pen stick. Just look for the funky notch toward the back of the crank gear.

I myself found a larger botch on the opposite side of the crank gear, I marked it with a red arrow on the pic Rob provided for you. I am not sure if this came on all 850s but it is a lot easier to see than the tiny notch.

I also use correction fluid when I do the timing belt, to enhance hard-to-see marks.

I agree, finding the crank timing mark is kind of difficult, but if you get the cam marks properly lined up, you should ba able to see them. Just make sure you have a STRONG light to shine on the crank. ALso, I too do what JPN does....use some correction fluid if you can.

Once you have the pulley off thats what you will see.
