What are these gudgets?
 

Dear All,

Greetings from cold Chicagoland.

I have 2 questions:

1. There is a micro switch kind of device attached to the hood catch. I thought they were ajar indicator switches, but the chime doesn't go off when the hood is open, nor is there any indication. What are these for?

2. There is a sensor in the engine compartment that looks sort of like a satellite dish, located right in front of the firewall, at the center. It has a probe pointing at the engine. The probe can be unscrewed.

BTW, my car is:

1994 Turbo T5 Sedan, automatic tranny, about to reach 144,000 miles. The engine & the tranny are still silky smooth.

This is just a guess. It is the outside weather temperature sensor for the LCD Display (MPG, Miles to Empty, Temperature, etc) below your gauge cluster in the dashboard.

Actually, the outside temp sensor is at a different location. It is shaped like a bulb, embedded in the mud guard under the bumper. I found it by spraying a can of duster, holding it upside down (I sprayed the bulb with freezing liquid, watched the temp gauge and it dropped quick). So, the satellite-looking thing by the firewall still remains mysterious. Haynes doesn't seem to point it out either.

There's also a green wire, very thin gage, that is by the battery and it is not hooked up on anything (the previous owner must have cut it by accident). The conductor portion was exposed, so I taped with electrical tape. 850's electrical system is really mysterious.

It might be Lo Jack. My car had Lo Jack installed just after the original owner purchased it. I'll take a look at my car and see if that looks similar in my car. - AB

This is the switch for the alarm system.

I have a 1995 (96 model) 850 which does not have a 'satellite dish' in the engine compartment. Do you have the Volvo alarm horn on the firewall or has somebody replaced it with something fancy?

Again, not on my car. Is it connected to anything at the other end?

Thank you for your reply. You might be right, my 850 has Volvo theft deterrent system, and the satellite dish does look like a horn. I just wonder how it gets activated because I never heard it goinf off.

I think that probe is the alarm horn. You can test the alarm by locking the car and then opening the door from the inside.

try locking your car with the remote with the hood open. if it's like mine the red led showing alarm status will not light, just press down on the hood and then the light comes on. that's how i figured out the use of thatswitch a while back

that little horn thing is exactly that, i noticed mine was broken it had came apart and it sounds really wierd when the alarm goes off

My alarm horn is.....just a horn, nothing fancy.

If your remote has a panic button on it press and hold it for 3 seconds and the alarm will sound.
