Won't start when warm?

I'm new to the forums and it seems like a cool place :cool:

My dad recently bought me a '97 Volvo 850GLT. He's an electrician and works on cars a lot in his free time, so he's usually able to solve most car problems. However he's having some trouble getting my Volvo to run correctly and he asked me if I could find some help for him on the internet.

The car starts fine when cold, but if you turn it off and try to start it again while it's warm, it won't. My dad says the car is acting like it's not getting enough fuel, but he has already replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter and the problem is persisting.

The speedometer is not working. The turn signals are also not working, but the hazard lights are.

Does anyone have any idea what the source(s) of these problems could be? I would appreciate any tips or ideas. Thanks!

I suspect a faulty ignition switch as the source of all your problems except the speedometer. That could be caused by a bad sensor on top of the transmission or a bad ABS unit (is the ABS light on?).

could also be the coolant temperature sensor.it is right under the termostart housing.

Thanks for the replies, I'm not sure about the ABS light, I'll let you know when I find out.

What year and style is the car? Turbo?

I'd check the coolant temp sensor, you can do that by connecting a OBD-II tool to it and reading the temp on the live data section. If the car is warm, 188 degrees F, and the temp reading is 22 degrees F on the tool, the temp sensor is likely bad sending the wrong reading to the motor causing an incorrect air/fuel ratio mix to start.

Also read the OBD-II port for codes.

The other problem with the turn signals is likely a bad ignition switch, the electrical end of it. Common problem that can be cured most of the time by turning the key back a little after you try to start the car. The part is only $60 so it's not bad.

The coolant temp sensor is just below the thermostat. Between it and the fuel pump relay they are the two most likely causes of the hot start problem you describe.

Is it the speedometer or odometer that stopped working ?? It's common on the higher mileage cars for the odometer to quit but not so much the speedometer.
If the speedo is the one that's dead you might want to check out the speed sensor mounted on the transmission.
