Yellow is dead!!! But now alive!

So I was asked from work to go to this driving school/driving event for work.
A driving school was putting it on kind of for racing driving for some Mini Coopers which we work on. They asked us to come to try to get us some business.

So my Boss gave me some racing tires for Yellow since he races alot.

The course was like a small road course. I went out for 2 sessions total. Once he road along with me to make sure I could handle driving it myself safely under speed. He had given me the ok to ride it alone.

During the second session I was out there for about 15 minutes. Keeping ahead and pulling away from a few cars really having a great time. As I was coming out of one corner I get on the gas and start picking up speed then I hear a rod knock. I let off the gas and limp it into the pits. Take the helmet off and open the hood and sure enough ROD KNOCK my heart dropped!

We had it towed back to the shop and it sits there right now till this weekend when I can pull the oil pan and inspect. But I have a feeling I am going to have to do a rebuild. Of course it happens at a bad time overall. It is my daily driver. The shop was nice enough to loan me out shop loaner for the time being.(740 non turbo wagon) But now I can get to work.

If needed we have some spare parts at work to piece together to get the motor going again.

Might have to search the forums for used parts as well but I guess in the end it will all work out.

Also my time will be a little more limited(on the forum) until I get it up and running again. Hoping to have it done in 3 to 4 weeks. I can mainly only work on it on the weekends. I will update this post as I go along.

Man, I hope you can find someone who knows volvos who can rebuild that for you /sarcasms/...

Seriously though, that sucks man, I hope you can get it done in a reasonable amount of time. While you're in there, why not go for some H beams? :)

tech Aug 30, 2010 08:47 PM

If I could afford it I would do that in a heart beat.
Also another tip I heard about is getting a 2001 or newer T5 short block and putting my head on it. The 2001 and newer cars use long rods. They will hold up to pressure alot better.

You could have your boss give you the 500 dollars you need for a set of RSI Rods. =)

especially if you drummed up any business for him. =)

Hope you get her going again soon. i know its no fun to have a car that doesn't move. And its even worce when its your DD...

jks2 Aug 31, 2010 05:27 AM

That sucks.

JimKW Aug 31, 2010 07:18 AM

Sorry to hear that, but at least we know the car is in good hands. Knowing you, it will be better when fixed than it was before throwing a rod.

gilber33 Aug 31, 2010 07:55 AM

could have been worse. I thought you meant you got into an accident. Oh well, now's your chance for those NA cams.

turbo matt Aug 31, 2010 08:28 PM

sorry to hear about that. Now is the best time for the upgrades:rolleyes:.

tech Aug 31, 2010 08:45 PM

Thanks guys I am planning on trying to upgrade some of the parts while in there but it all depends on the $$ I have in the account. I wish I could get some out of the shop for help. But they are helping me alot already! I have the shop loaner to drive for now.He is also going to try to help some on parts as well.

But I will not know for sure what is wrong till sunday.

Gilber I might send you a PM soon about the degree wheel.

Man, PM me if you need me to check for parts at my local Volvo yard. The place here has about 100 Volvo's on the yard and I may be able to get you something.

Same with me - I'll be glad to hunt down anything you need. Except n/a cams. Some sneaky bastige already went and got them today and they're already sitting in my...um, i mean, THEIR garage...

And what a good deal that sneaky bastige got too... =)

I might be able to come up for a day (maybe two) to give you a hand if you need it. I also have the right size ball hone if you need it.

Yellow's not dead just in need of some intensive care

JimKW Sep 1, 2010 07:15 AM

Tech, you want a set of NA cams? I have a set that I got a good deal on a few years ago when I was doing my head on the white car. Never put them in.

boxpin Sep 1, 2010 10:02 AM

Sorry to hear Tech. Take this opportunity to make some good rebuild threads.

Send progress pics.

silkhope Sep 1, 2010 03:07 PM

Sorry to hear about you misfortune, let me know how I can help.

tech Sep 1, 2010 08:10 PM

Thank You everyone. Jim maybe. I am going to send you a PM.

I will let everyone know on Sunday exactly what is going on with it.
If it is only bearings I think I am going to measure everything and if the crank is good just throw in a set of bearings. Then start building another motor to drop in later. But it is still all up in the air as of this moment.

tech, sorry I haven't gotten back to you yet. I've been super busy with work and school starting. I have the QBM document that contains a copy of the degree wheel, if you can PM your email address I can send you the file.
