The ABS module is a computer board that takes in signals from the wheel and speed sensors and instructs the ABS pump/valves accordingly. That typically wouldn't create a soft pedal. A spongey pedal suggests there is air in the system so the first thing would be to check for a leak at any of the wheel calipers as well as at the master cylinder. You could have the brakes bled to see if that improves the pedal fee but the issue could be internal to the master (meaning its leaking internally so there won't necessarily be any loss of fluid). As far as your sound - if the ABS kicks in, you should feel a studder (like a "braaaat" sound and feel in the pedal) If the grating sound is more monotone, then I'd inspect the pads/rotor for wear.

In terms of repairing an ABS controller, start by reading up on rebuild services like Xemodex, Rocha-tec or Midwest ABS. Their sites have content on typical symptoms and trouble shooting. These services repair your board for a fraction of the cost of a new unit (~$250 for the repair vs $1K for a replace) and since its your unit, there's no dealer programming required.
