Default 2001 c70

This is my first post. Also I am not a car person at all, my husband is the one who usually does the repairs. So if I'm not making sense please tell me. My sister has just received a 2001 c70 from our mom and it drove great on the 6 hour drive to get it home. We noticed the past week that it was shifting pretty hard at times. Mostly during stop and go traffic. Well the other day she was out and an arrow started flashing, she wasnt able to get it moving so she turned the car off and back on, put in the reverse and said that it was jolting and having a hard time going back but once it caught it just flew back on her. Well she decided she should get the car home which was only a few blocks. She wasnt able to go over 20 mph and was a very jittery ride back. She's only 18 so I took it upon myself to do some research and help her out. I came across a forum about the pnp switch and cars being stuck in winter mode. Her winter mood button works but I tried rowing the shiftier between park and drive about 20 times and turned the car on and the flashing arrow went away. I don't want to take her car around the block until I know that will not cause more damage than what's already wrong. So what I'm wanting to know does that sound like what happens when the pnp switch goes bad? Is there anything else I should look for if so? Also IV read that people can get codes but she has no read button is that something the 2001 models don't have? I am jeep owner and am still driving my first vechile ever so I'm not familer with volvos so any advice would be amazing. We love this little car its way to fun to give up on!
