Rattling noise

Hi guys

I'm getting a really annoying rattling noise from the front end when ever I hit any uneven road surfaces

I can hear it clearly with windows up but when I put the windows down cant hear it

I've changed the track rods inner and pure but the rattle is still there

Any ideas where I should be checking??

Thanks

It's a 1998 vOlvo c70 t5

I have the same rattle in mine, and I THINK it's from worn out spring seats. Here's a link to IPD's selection of them.

Thanks for post...how do I check this??

Cactuslegs 07-29-2012 03:07 PM

Ummm, I'm not positive, since I've never done it myself, but I would assume you need to take it apart enough to get a good look at the seat and see if the rubber is damaged, possibly split like a motor mount, or brittle like an old vacuum line. Also try giving the shock absorber a shake back and forth to see if the seat has any play in it. (It looks like it might be a little bearing in the seat that the top of the shock goes through, but that's just my guess, I'm not sure how it all fits together).

update - i took the car to a specialist who reckons the rear brake shoes may be rattling

could this be the cause..

really doing my head in not being able to identify where its coming from

Cactuslegs 08-16-2012 02:39 PM

Uh, these cars do not have brake shoes. They are pads on both the front and the rear, which makes me wonder about this "specialist" you visited. Does it sound like it's coming from the front of the car? or the rear? I HIGHLY doubt it is your brakes that are rattling.

hi cactuslegs

these defo have shoes and pads at the rear

its diffucult to pinpoint exactly where its coming from

The most common rattle sound comes from the dash. If the dash is good, and it sounds like a baseball bouncing around in a metal bucket, it's likely your sway bar end links.

A couple of other things that you can have noise from is the strut mounts, control arms (usually not noisy) and spring seats. You can check your spring seats by opening the hood and pressing down on the car to make it bounce. The strut tip on the top of the strut tower should not bounce up and down like a piston. Also, you can check the part on top by trying to turn it with your hand, it should not turn.

BTW, These cars to have a set of shoes in the rear drum used as part of the emergency brake system.

hi rspi

iv had the track control arms replaced and also the inner and outer tie rods.

i can only hear it when the windows are closed and the car goes over uneven road surface.

rspi 08-16-2012 05:19 PM

Likely the sway bar end links. Jack the car up and put it on a jack stand. Reach under there and try to move the end link. They should not move at all, sometimes you can hear them click as they move.

TONY12340 08-17-2012 12:41 PM

i have jackked the car up and the sway bars appear to be in good condition no movement

i did notice that on the front disc the retaining bolt was missing and the disc move freely but i wonder if this is the cause as the disc is held in place firmly when the wheel is attached

i think i will refit the pads all round and see if any are loose...driving me potty not knowing where its coming from
