Default temperature gauge

hi again - on our 1999 c70 the temperature gauge takes a long time to get up even close to the 3 o'clock position (after about 10-15 miles it is not even halfway there)) and it takes just as long to get a halfway decent heat out of the ducts. could this be the thermostate or somehing else?
thanks
fritz

I would check the thermostat first.

i replaced the thermostat yesterday, the gauge goes up to the 3 o'clock position now and it heats up good. but since i couldn't lift it up i took the upper hose of the radiator off to drain some fluid - spilled some on the concrete garage floor. when i was done and refilled it with coolant i didn't think i was able to put as much in as i took out/spilled. i took it for a ride around the block and filled a little more in, it is close to the max now, the gauge stays at 3 o'clock. hmm, maybe the spilled fluid looked more than what it actually was - so i hope.
thanks for your answer.
