01 S40 will only start with gas pedal
Hello,
i have an 01 S40 that if i turn the key, it wants to start but it won't!!! It will only start if I press the gas pedal and turn the key. Once it's started, it will only stay on if I keep on the gas pedal, as soon as I let it go, it stalls. How come?
I hooked up a scangauge and I don't get any codes. Any ideas why this is happening?
thanks

so I replaced the Fuel pressure regulator, still won't start unless I give it gas, and as soon as I stop giving it gas i stalls.
Then I cleaned the Idle Air Control valve (IACV) as stated at s40concepts, and it still no go.
I did get a engine code of P0102 - Mass or Volume air flow circ input, I believe this is the IACV being dirty.
What the heck is wrong with this car???

Iacv
Try hooking a vac gauge up to a vac line between the throttle plate and the cylinder head. Then have a friend get it started and very slowly let the throttle plate close while watching the vac gauge. As the engine gets to the point of perfect idle you should see spec vac for idle. Then if you let the throttle plate close until it starts to run bad you should see the vac reading more than spec. If this happens you have a IACV that is stuck closed and you should replace it. Sorry but I don't know what spec idle vac is for your car. Or you could just replace your IACV and see what happens. Hope is works out for you.

On my 2001 I first replaced the IAC valve for about $200 from the dealer. The problem continued. I then replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator which cured the problem. The dealer cost a few years ago was $80 for the FPR. I understand it's quite a bit higher now.
One test your mechanic can try is to first remove the IAC, then reconnect the electrical connector. Now hold the IAC in one hand while covering the square IAC opening in the intake manifold with the thumb of his other hand. Now have a helper start the car. The test here is to control engine rpm with his thumb over the IAC opening in the intake manifold while looking at the IAC motor to see if it moves in and out with the changes in engine rpm. The helper always keeps his hand on the ignition key so he can shut off the engine should anything go wrong.
This is a great time to clean the IAC passages also. You most likely will need a new IAC valve gasket if you try this. Luckily these are pretty cheap.
