'04 S40 turn sig/rev lamp fuse blowing

I just purchased an '04 S40 2 weeks ago. Everything was ok...now it is blowing the turn signal/reverse lamp fuse. Replace the fuse, and when you hit the turn signal lever, or put it in reverse, the fuse blows again. Any ideas on what could be causing this? or even where to look? Any advice/assistance would be greatly appreciated!

RE: '04 S40 turn sig/rev lamp fuse blowing

Here is one suggestion. First, remove the all the front and rear turn signal and backup bulbs. Then replace the fuse. Then, one at a time, try using both turn signals and the backup lights. Does the fuse blow? Yes, then the problem is in the switch(s) or wiring before the bulb (whichever one blew the fuse). If no, then the problem is either the bulb itself or the wiring after the bulb. I'm betting you simply have a bad bulb which has failed and shorted.

To access the front turn signal bulbs you must remove the whole turn signal housing. The housing is held tight by a phillips head screw beside the headlight. You then pull the housing forward (not up or out).

Bad Luck! I removed all the bulbs. Now the fuse blows as soon as you turn on the key. Not sure where to go next w/ this problem. I did notice the under hood lamp is on the same fuse. the hood has been removed for painting, and i can't find the under hood lamp. maybe it is shorted out. Does anyone know where the wiring gets routed for this lamp so i'll know where to look? Thanks!

My 2001 does not have an underhood light, lol. (at least not that I can find. Only hook ups are for the windshield washer hoses) Was the hood missing when the problem first surfaced?

No, the hood was on the car when I purchased it. But I do know it was removed for repair/refinishing. I just noticed the fuse box cover indicated the fuse for turn signals and reverse lamps also was for the underhood lamp. So I'm just trying to track down anything that might be shorted out...like an underhood circuit that had been cut and just found it's way to a short. I know...kinda grasping at straws here...but I'm about to give in and take it to someone that has a clue what they're doing! [&o]
