Default 1998 S40 1.8 new battery but now stalling??

Please Help!
I am about to sell my Volvo S40(1998)1.8l(gdi version)and have a bit of an annoying problem.
I recently had to fit a new battery as i havent been useing the car and the batterywould keep on going flat but since doing this i have a problem with the car stalling? As i mentioned i havent been useing the car much so i dont know if this would be a problem but it starts fine, trouble iswhen i stop at lights etc it stalls so i have to keep up the revs to stop this from happening-very frustrating!
All i have done is changed the battery so i have no idea why this has started to happen,it was fine before?
Thanks for reading.....

sounds like your alternator not providing a charge may have been the issue...

Have been looking in my haynes manual and come across a section about changing the battery.
It mentions something about the ECU loses its memory of the idle speed control and it has to re-learn it.Has anyone else had this problem and did the re-learning process work???
