2000 S40 - wont idle
I had the car start to not idle about a week ago
I figured it was plugs, wires, coilpacks since they hadnt been done for about 90K. The plugs didnt look bad - a little white but not worn bad.
I just got done and started it and.......it still wont idle......
The mileage on the last tank went from 31mpg to 21mpg?
Any ideas on where to go to next??????????

Have you tried cleaning the idle control valve?
What kind of mileage have you got on the car...might be time to replace your PCV/oil trap... see guide below:

the pdf doesn't work but keep scrolling to page II and a new link has been provide for pics.

Try cleaning the idle control valve too...or is that what you meant above? If you are looking at the front of your engine the ICV is attached to the intake manifold just to the left of the throttle body. It mounts to the manifold using two scews - take 'em off, inspect the gasket (replace if necessary), spray with throttle body cleaner or other, let soak and dry, reinstall. Easy peasy.

Hmmm, and to confirm, when you disconnected your MAF with car running, there was no change in behavior? if that is the case, I'm thinking maybe a vacuum leak. YOu could try what is described in the attached thread but otherwise a good old smoke-test might be your next best recourse...I would hold off on throwing any parts at this until you can confirm that you don't have a pesky vacuum leak somewhere...

Does it take an extra long time to start? Then you have to hold your foot on the gas pedal to make it idle? When my 2001 did that I first replaced the Idle Air Control motor for $200 which did not solve the problem. After searching this forum I discovered the Fuel Pressure Regulator and replaced it. That did the trick for me.
