2001 Volvo s40 idle control issue?
Hello all, when I sit at a light or in park, RPM's intermittently rise and fall between 900 and 750. I usually have the ac on here in Tampa Fla, and I can feel the engine strain when it lowers. I brought it to dealer who checked it, and told me they couldn't replicate the problem, and no codes are coming up. I did a little research here and discovered that it may be the IDLE CONTROL VALVE. Either dirty or needing replaced, and am not sure how to clean it. I think the part costs about $200 bucks, but I bet the dealer would charge much more, any ideas? Thanks guys.

It is not hard to replace at all. You could just clean it if you think it is that. Mine has the same problem and i think that it is just that the small motor has trouble with the A/C compressor. On 30forty50.com there is a nice write up, atleast think it is 30forty
I looked all over 30forty, and it seems like a great site for S40 info. Only I saw no real pictures or directions on just how to remove IAC and.clean or replace. Seems lots of people have this issue. Also don't want to mess up gasket or hose clamps in process. Will try cleaning valve when I can find more info.
You will need a new gasket before removing the IAC. The thin paper gasket likes to tear especially if the IAC has never been removed.
The IAC is really easy to service. It's on the front of the intake and has only a single connector plus 4 bolts (IIRC). Spray throttle body cleaner in the rectangle part that idle air flows through, not the motor itself.
