2002 s40 torn CV Boot

I've had my s40 for a couple of months now (got it used, great shape). I took it in for its scheduled oil change and the mechanic told me the right outside CV boot was torn. He also said they typically just replace the shaft and can do it for around $350. I believe I can do this myself as I have rebuilt complete engines (some time ago), but I have not worked on a front wheel drive drive train.

So my question is this: Is it ok to go with replacing the shaft or should I rebuild my original one? What are you guys doing in this situation?

Thanks,

I had replaced a boot myself on my wife's Mazda years ago and it wasn't too bad. The hardest part was getting the axle nut off. I just had one done on my V50 but it was covered under warranty. As far as boot vs shaft, the boot is cheaper but if the joint is contaminated then you may want to go with a shaft. Otherwise, you may need to rebuild the joint.

its a easy job if u have done engine repair. most of the time u should remove and have the axle rebuilt usually runs about $50.
