Ok guys a friend of mine is looking into a 2004 Volvo s40 1.9t. He doesn't know much about Volvo's and I don't know much aobut the s40's period.
Can you guys tell me if the 2004 model is a good model.
FYI he is looking into the previous 2004 model not the newer body style one.
Looking for one like this one,

I don't havea 2004, but do have a 2001 S40 1.9T andI love it. It's a daily commuter and has made three cross-country trips with no problems other than a couple of speeding tickets because it's so smooth on the road that you don't realize you're going so fast.
I have had some minor problems though. This thing eats brakes - I think I'm on my third set (at 80K). Next time I will replacewith aftermarket rotors & pads and see if it gets better. Went through a couple of coils around 60K. Just replaced a leaky heater core - a challenging8-hour pain in the ****. Needed a fuel-sender recalibration back when it was new. Had to replace the blower motor resistor last year. Replaced an ECT and a thermostat. Replaced a turbo oil return line gasket. Replaced the exhaust manifold studs & nuts (a common problem that's been fixed with updated nuts). Also had to replace the driver's side window regulator.
I've had nothing really catastrophic happen, and consider most of it's problems as general maintenance for a seven year old car.
I'm the original owner, and it's been babied and well cared for.In fact, I recently replaced my 4Runner with a 98 V70 because I was so happy with the S40. Having VADIS allows me to do most of the maintenance and repairs myself and was also deciding factor.I do like the fit, finish and interior better on my S40 than on my older V70 - I almost considered getting a newer V40 but decided I really wanted the larger V70.
Remember, this generation of S40has been (in Europe) around since 1995. I believe they worked out anyissues on this platform long before they came to the US. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to get a 04 S40, although I'd personally look at an S60 because the back seat of the S40 is a bit tight.

CVVT cam pulley can go.. Oil change between recommended service is a must. suspension, engine mount noise fault tracing could be challenging. If getting 04 the 16" sport package tire is pricy to replace (really odd size 215/50R16) pretty much only bf goodridge and some off major brand tire manufacturer make them... Also if your area that u live in uses lot's of salt.. every time u take off wheel make sure u clean corrosion off the hub ore wheels can fall off or come loose easliy
