i took my car to the dealer and bought a new fob and paid to have them program it they tried one time and said it wasn't taking and the fob was stuck in the ignition then told me it would cost me 2,000 to get it fixed does this seam right and what would cause it to not be able to be programmed
did the old fob work and you were just trying to get a spare? Last time I had a problem with a key getting stuck in the ignition, it was due to the shifter button being stuck in and not related to the key. Don't understand their inability to program a new fob - particularly if your old fob was working. What was going on when you went in to get a new fob?
i got the car from an auction it only had one key the car would go into immobilizer mode saying break failure stop safely then i lost the only key i had for it. Also sometimes the key wouldn't work then i got a code saying alarm system needs attention when they put the key in to program it the yellow running lights and the red light in the car started flashing flashing also i bought a diagnostic unit it says pin code not default
if you have proper documentation of ownership, I'd think the dealer would be able to program a key based on the VIN. What it seems like here is there's something else wrong with the car other than a missing key and unfortunately with an auction car you don't usually get a full history. If its a theft recovery then there may be some damage that the shop did not itemize for you or explain what needs to be done when they came up with the $2K estimate. Can't speak to the diagnostic unit you're trying to use. Dealers use a software/hardware platform called VIDA/DICE which can read all the generic and proprietary codes as well as do software uploads and resets. This is the tool they'd use to program a new key etc.
If the dealer is saying you need a new ignition switch then the labor is 8 hours from VIDA. The correct procedure is to remove the dash to get to the switch. When mine went bad I had to hack up the plastic behind the switch in order to wiggle it out. Now any reputable shop cannot do this and must take the dash apart as specified by Volvo. My question then is what is the shop rate per hour? Then what parts are involved? A new key with programming is $250, switch around $150, then labor and tax.
