Default 2005 S40 2.4 fuel pump ???

Hello all, I have a 2005 that's making a whining noise from the fuel tank area that I think is the fuel pump going out. I say think because when I put the car in park and press the accelerator the noise stays the same no change in pitch or volume, plus no "classic" fuel pump issues like sputtering or failing to start anyone here have any idea's ? Thanks in advance.

You can also unscrew the gas cap and use a piece of rubber hose to listen. Just stick the hose in the hole and place the other end up to your ear. This was the test on the old 240 to see if the pre-pump was working. Or use a mechanics stethoscope. These are fairly cheap from the parts store.

If the pump is the source of the whine it should get very loud. If the whine is not from the pump the sound should not change. I understand preventative maintenance but would be leery of replacing a pump based on how it sounds. They are quite expensive.

Yeah I wouldn't just randomly replace it. They make noise anyway and on the P1s, rarely fail.
