2006 S40 No Pressure in Fuel Rail
 

Experts,

A good friend of mine has a 06 S40 with the 2.4 gas engine in it. The car left her stranded on the side of the road here in frozen Great Falls, Montana recently. TBH, I like my cars to speak with a Bavarian dialect, but I am capable of doing some basic troubleshooting. I've troubleshot the car down to fuel. When I checked tonight, there was very little fuel in the fuel rail. Few drops, no pressure.

Its been ridiculously cold this winter, below zero many days. Ive considered ice blockage and the effects of contaminated fuel. Shes over 1/2 tank, so I dont think icing is the issue.

It suggests to me (1) fuel system fuse (2) fuel pressure sensor or (3) fuel pump, and obviously all the wiring and connections in the system. I did not hear a fuel pump as I attempted to start the car.

Questions for the experts:
- Should I hear the pump spin up when I turn the ignition key?
- If either the fuel rail pressure sensor or the pump were misbehaving, would it throw a code? She did have a #2 bank lean code recently. There are no codes in the ECU now.
- If the sensor is bad, is it visibly bad? Bent, broken, leaking, clogged, etc?

Thanks in advance, everybody. Ive done a bit of surfing, but didnt find my problem exactly. Am I missing anything that should be obvious??

things in play: fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel filter, injector relay. Not sure if a wonky pressure sensor would shut you down to zero PSI at the rail but an interesting question... Relays are easy to bypass so start by jumpering the fuel pump relay to see if you hear the pump go on. You should be able to depress the schrader valve on the end of the fuel rail to see if any fuel comes out. I'd think there should be some residual pressure prior to start up...(but my experience is with an 850 and S40 with the pressure regulator not the sensor...
