2009 Volvo S40 T5 @ 106k

I’m going to look at an 09 S40 with the 2.5T 5cyl here in a couple of days. Purchasing it from an individual.

what are some common things to look at? Any common issues?

I’m in Oklahoma, so not too worried about rust. asking price is $6k

Do an internet search on "pre-sale car inspection" and you'll probably find a good checklist (all the "normal stuff", like checking the corners for signs of bodywork, looking for water damage, etc.).

Off the top of my head, I'd look for a sticker indicating that the timing belt has been changed (due at 100,000 miles, IIRC), or 10 years (?). If it hasn't been done, it's due.

The turbos can wear out, and are suspect over 100,000 miles as well.

Pop the oil filler cap when it's idling and see if you have excessive blowby (lots o' hot air rushing out). The ECG and PCV systems are "interesting" in these cars.

Pay very close attention to how it shifts, especially when cold (be wary of someone who has the car warmed up when you arrive). Watch for clunky shifts (up or down). If you can find it (down behind the radiator on the driver's side) pull the transmission dipstick and look at the condition of the fluid - dark, black stinky fluid is an invitation to run away.

If you have someone to help, watch for excess motor movement as you cycle through P-R-N-D and back (indicating bad motor / transmission mounts). Not hard to swap or expensive though.

The suspension could be worn - see if you get a noticeable "thump" through the steering wheel when you tap the brakes (indicating compression of a worn bushing in the front suspension).

Try to let the A/C run as long as possible, to see if it goes intermittent (a common problem, though one usually easy to fix). This time of year, it's big bucks off the asking price if the A/C is anything short of 100% (at least here in Arizona). ;-)
