ABS Control Module, speedometer, etc.

Hello,

I have a 2001 Volvo S40 1.9L Currently my speedometer does not work, as well as the odometer. My ABS and Brake lights are on. I know that the speed is reported by the ABS Control Module, therefore it explains why my speedometer does not work when my ABS light is on.

Thanks to this forum, I have learned that you can get a cheaper rebuild for your ABS module. However, I have another option, which I am not sure is going to work.

Has the ABS Control Module changed on the next Volvo S40 model? Can I take out the ABS Control Module from the 2003 Volvo S40 ? Does anyone one if those parts are the same ?

Thanks

I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion the ABS Module is bad. When the ABS light comes on, it means the ABS system has detected a fault and disabled itself. You need to find out what the fault is.

Find someone who has a scanner that can read ABS codes, and get the codes read. It may be a speed sensor.

where exactly is the speed sensor located ?

I believe the Vehicle Speed Sensor is located on the transmission.

Do yourself a favor, get the ABS codes read.

Do you know if Autozone can read those ? Or would I have to go to a private shop? Its probably $80 at the dealership..

Yes, Autozone can read the codes. I still think that it is your ABS module, but check to find out for sure.

I seriously doubt Autozone will help you. ABS Codes are Chassis codes, the generic code readers found at Autozone will only read Powertrain codes.

It may well be, and probably is. But rather than throwing parts at it, he might as well diagnose the problem first.
