Hi all, I have a 2011 S40 T5. I came home from a week long vacation to find that both key fobs would not work. Took out both key thing-ys, inserted each one in the keyhole and neither would even turn (despite the copious amount of WD-40 sprayed).

Changed the battery in one of the fobs, still nothing. So, I guess I left a light on and the battery is dead. Unfortunately, I can't get in the car to open the hood or even the trunk.

Is there any way to get in my car? Any super-secret keyhole, button, cable - something, anything, that I can access to get in my stupid car?

I assume you have a key fob with an enclosed blade key. In theory, the blade key should mechanically unlock the driver's door. That would give you access to the hood latch, as you suggested. It may be that the lock mechanism is corroded, though that seems unlikely.

The blade key lock on my 2006 worked smoothly the first time I tried it in 2014.

If it doesn't turn for you, it might be time for a serious locksmith:


... or the dealer. If it's a "desert island" situation, you might be able to raise the front of the car, remove the gravel shield and probe upward behind the radiator to release the hood latch.

Thank you! Very frustrating that neither key blades work. Took me a while to even get them to fit in the lock - once I did - neither will even turn. I even wonder if they are even the correct key blades...

I have tried taking the front grill off (and contemplated taking the gravel shield off) but realize that I would probably cause more harm than good. :)

Have a locksmith coming over today for $45. Just hope it's a simple fix of recharging the battery and not something serious. Not gonna lie - we have two used Volvos - and have had nothing but problems from them of late...

You will have a "reading" from the lock guy about the state of the locks by the time you read this. If in fact the blade keys are cut wrong, you can get good replacement blades from myswedishparts.com. For my 2006, they cut a good working key based on the VIN.

For the 2011, YMMV, of course.
