AM/FM radio dead in S40T5

I've owned my 2004 S40 T5 volvo for about 2 years now - love this car! It was relatively easy to buy my car but whoa! The cost of maintenance is another story (at least for me). Question for forum readers: my AM/FM CD player died (not a code issue). Dealership in Seattle ran diagnostics and found code ICM-1A41 "no communication with AM/FM module." Their plan: replace module and recheck - no obvious loose wiring present.
Cost? $1000.![EEK!](https://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif)
I've done some searching and am willing to try anything to avoid spending THAT much money. Anyone have any ideas/links ? I've got a neighbor who is a mechanic and has worked on Volvos, I may be able to tap him for help. Is it worth looking around to find a replacement module on my own?
Thanks for any help!

I haven't heard of this problem before. The AM/FM Module (AFM) is located in the trunk in the right rear quarter panel. It is linked to the Infotainment Control Module (ICM) in the center pod by a fiber optic cable. Check that the cable is attached at both ends. Might even disconnect, blow some compressed air lightly into the socket to remove any debris and reconnect.
I'll try to find a diagram of it all.
