Automatic shift console Questions

[&:] Hey yall greetings from Southern Cali. I just bought a 2001 Automatic Volvo S40 1.9T and here are my questions. At night, the light in the shift console which allows me see what gear i'm in is probably burnt out, and I want to replace it. How do I do this? Also, since I dont have the manual yet, what is the little "W" button that lights up a little orange up arrow on the dash? Thanks!

RE: Automatic shift console Questions

In the back of the console there should be 2 screws.Remove them and the back of the console should be loose. Then remove the grey cover at the console it kind of holds the shifter boot down.
Then the console should come out.

The W buttom is for winter mode. The car starts off in 3rd gear so it won't slip in the snow.

Thanks! I live in Southern California, and as you know it rains very little (except during El Nino) Can the "W" button be used during the rain? Or should I just leave it alone, and never use it? By the way you're best TECH! and very helpful to us Volvo owners.

I would leave the W button alone and never use it.

Thank you for the compliment.

If you have any trouble removing the console let me know.
I may have forgotten something and may need to be reminded.

Check out the "off topic" selection from the menu..................you will find that "tech" is invaluable to a Volvo owner. It is very interesting reading about owner's problems..............even 'though you may not be experiencing an issues. Tech generally has significant input and so I look at this forum most every day.............its very interesting. As to the "arrow"............make sure it is not lit up on the dash or your performance will be hindered.
