Blinker/Turn Signal Problems

Hi all, I'm new, but have had this problem for a while.

my blinkers dont work when i try and turn. when i lock my car, all four will blink to show the security is armed. my emergency blinkers (4ways) work just fine as well. the turn signals will work occasionally, about 10-20% of the time. u can imagine i really want this fixed!

the dealership says its a fairly common problem and i need a computer chip replaced to the tune of ~$200 (probably 300 when its all said and done)

anybody know if i can fix this myself? i'm very handy (mech engineer) and have been exploring my car for a few years now so i hope i can take care of this myself.

let me know whatcha think!

Thanks!

RE: Blinker/Turn Signal Problems

I believe the Hazard switch is also the relay for the turn signals.

Here is a site for a wiring diagram if that will help you.

For V40/S40: The turn signal and hazard relay switch is next to the interior fuse box (driver's side, under the dash on left). The hazard button is just a switch and it's not easy to remove and replace and you may damage dash stuff trying to get it out. Trust me, don't replace the hazard button if you don't have to.

So then, if your turn signals AND (operative word AND) hazards are not working or working intermittently, you should replace the flasher relay. To do so, the unit is located next the fuse box. If your car still has the upholstered panel above the pedals, it comes out with 2 easy clips that you pull down and pop out. Next to the fuse box to the left, the flasher unit in my V40 had a white housing that I think serves as a tool to help you insert a new flasher. The white housing can be pried off and kept for the new unit. You have to either wriggle with some effort, or use vise grips to pull the bad unit. I used vise grips lightly clamped to wriggle it out.

I'm on West Coast of U.S. and found the part at NAPA for $12. That part number is 111953227D. I was seeing prices for part No. MB953383 and 30870939 anywhere from $15 to $52!

I've read other posts where just taking out the relay and cleaning the contacts worked, but it didn't for me (they would work a few times and then fail again... and then work again and then not work again...) so you might as well just spend the $12 and get a new one that will last another 140,000 miles.

Repair - exchange, or solder the pins inside

Here is manual for location of relay -
after you can buy the new one, or you can open relay and try to solde the pins - as I solved by soldind.

Volvo turn signal headlight wiper problem

I had the turn signal not work, the headlight only has low beam, and the wiper is only one speed on my 2010 xc90. I have reset the battery and it works for a day, what else could it be?

Water damage to your CEM on a xc90 is a possiblility - Have you scanned the car with a compatible scan tool - that may give you a direction to look -

Common Failures:
• Water damage
• Complete loss of communication where the CEM will not communication with the rest of the network and the diagnostic tool.
• No LIN communication with alternator (ACM)
• Starter motor not working even though start is approved by the immobilizer sequence.
• Turn signals not working are all or one side turned on continuously.
• Low beams, high beams or fog lights failures.
• Horn not working at all.
• Wipers not working at all or stuck in high speed.
• Fuel pump not engaging.

That seems to be spot on, I am hoping not due to the price involved but it would check the boxes. I thought the same due to when I reset the problems comes back. Also the fan runs intermittently when the car is cut off, it's very strange

I agree

I will be taking the car to the Volvo dealership( diagnostic fee from hell) and see how that goes but I am concerned, a cem is quite a bit of money. I haven't unpacked all my things from the move to include the diagnostic tool but I will see if autozone can run it first

A CEM replacement/reseal will cost at least a couple of thousand dollars at the dealer - so you might want to rethink your course of action. A Volvo dealer will not install a Xemodex product, only a Volvo product. A large independent familiar with Volvo or a Volvo specialist would be a place to have a Xemodex product installed. Xemodex has a listing of shops on their website.

"Fan runs intermittently"

If you are referring to your heat/ac fan - If "afterblow" is turned on - the heater fan will run for ~7 minutes after the park is parked for ~50 minutes, to blow the remaining condensation off the evaporator. This helps prevent the stinky sock smell that ac systems sometimes have.
