Could a broken inner boot cause noticeable vibration in the steering wheel. When I go at about 70-80 mph the steering wheel start vibrating a lot. When I replaced the tires I was told the CV axle needed replacement. On the other hand, my mechanic said the inner boot needed to be replaced and if it does not improve then the axle need to be replaced. The vibration is very loud. Thanks.

 

If the inner joint has any play at all it needs to be replaced. The inner joints go bad all the time on the S40 axles.

 

Also, are you sure your tires are balanced properly?
