Check engine light and battery charge failure
I have a S40 sedan. Yesterday I found the light 19 'Check engine', light 16 'battery charge failure', and light 12 'low oil pressure' didn't go out until the engine was started.
I checked the manual: "after a few seconds, all light except 9 and 20 will go out. Once the engine starts, 9 and 20 will also go out." I have no idea of those symbols. Could anyone help explain? thanks! |
RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
As long as they go off after you start the car I would not worry about it.

RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
thanks for your information!
I have another question, it took a long time to start the engine(maybe 5-6 seconds), what should Ido now? |
RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
You might have a bad fuel pressure regulator. It is very common for these cars to have them go bad.

RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
Hi tech, the new replacement is very high before considering the label, how about cleaning or fix of the regulater? it's possible?
|
RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
My car is a used 2002 S40 1.9T with 87K miles age. I have afforded $7K to complete the deal including TAX and insuance in last week.To behonestI haven't any more money to pay for the expensive fixing.I'm afraid the engine can't be started someday recently. what can I do now? who can give me a guide? thanks.

RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
What tech said is about the only thing that is very common that causes those symptoms.
Go to google shopping Type in Volvo s40 Fuel Pressure Regulator Sort results by price You can just buy the regulator, not all the housing for ~$100 (I have NEVER used this so no guarantee) That is the ONLY thing you can do! |
RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
thanks for your guide. By google shopping, I found following3 typical regulaters, the prices are different:
1.autopartsway,2000-2002 Volvo S40 OE Service Fuel Pressure Regulator, $111.94, 1 YEAR WARRANTY 2.2003-2004 Volvo S40 - OES Genuine Fuel Pressure Regulator, Volvo S40, 2003-2004, 2003-2004: 4Cyl 1.9L ,$127.95 3.partsgeek, 2002 Volvo S40 Fuel Pressure Regulator OES Genuine Volvo Fuel Pressure Regulator 1.9L 4 Cyl, $205.95 with tax and free shipping My questions: 1.Which one will fits well? 2.Is there any difference between 2002 S40 and 2003 S40 for this regulater? 3.What the OE Service means? Thank you very much. And, yesterday I have new findings, when the car is cold, it took a long time to start(4-5 seconds, about 10 cranks(here the crank means the engine's crank rotating circles)),sounds weak; but for warm car(after some driving), the starting is normal, succeed at first crank, sounds strong. May I know what's your advice? |
RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
Have you checked the battery?
How cold is cold in your area? I have a 2000 S40, I do not know anything about these regulators I was simply passing on the information. OE means Original Equipment |
RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
I lived in college station, TEXAS. There was a snow a month ago, it was said the snow had never happened in recent 20 years. About -3 centidegree in last night, I guest not lower than -10 centidegree for the most cold weather. Do you have any advice? thanks.

RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
Have you checked the battery? no, I haven't. I don't know how to check. The baterry light was on before ignition, but went off when driving.
|
RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
I mean do you know how old the battery is in the car?
|
RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
After checking the document, I know the battery was replaced at7/21/2007.

RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
I would suggest taking it to a VOLVO dealer and telling them you just bought the car and want it looked over. That's what I did and they found everything that was wrong with it. ie: bad airbag, throttle cable replacement, new brakes. They didn't even charge me for the check up!
Good Luck! |
RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
Thanks very much for your suggestion. After communication, the primary owner promised to have a check for this sedan and afford the cost of necessary fix. The primary owner is a good man.
|
RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
Apparently, no such luck for me!

RE: Check engine light and battery charge failure
New finding. The starting is ok for warm car, that means if I close the engine, and re-start it in a few time, it's started easily. That's whatI want.
And, it's getting worse. After 1 day's parking, the starting remains about 5 second as before. But the first rotating sounds weakly, at the time the Check Engine Light is still on. After about 10 seconds of weak rotating, it becomes normal, and the Light goes off. Can someone help me? And the previous owner had the mechanic had a check. But it was said the fuel presssure hadn't problem. The next step they're going to replace the spark plugs, coil and ignition swith. The replacement will work? i'm worry about that. I need some advise here. |
