Check Engine Light - Help Needed CVT Hub

I have a S40 with @36,000 miles on it, I have taken it to a volvo dealership since I purchased it for regular schedule maintenance and oil changes. A few weeks ago, the check engine light came on, and I took it to a local mechanic I trust to tell me why, and he stated the CVT Hub needed replacement, and that I should also so have the timing belt replaced, the estimated cost was $1,800.

Last Oct I lost my job, as many others have as well, so spending money like that is an issue. However, he told me he would reset the light, and drive it and see if it comes on again. He assured me I was not damaging the valves or engine.

Yeseterday the light came back on, and I took it this time to a volvo dealer. He is also telling me the CVT Hub should be replaced, and while at it the timing belt, and he should do an oil flush and begin using synthetic oil from this point forward. The cost is @1,600.

My concern is this is a low millage car, however it is out of warrenty. I followed all the volve schedules for service. How could this part, CVT Hub, have failed. Are they deffective? Are they under recall?

Does anyone else have expereince and can offer my some guidance.

I need the car to look for work, but as the say, bad luck may be the only luck one gets. Please help.

We need to know what year it is, first off.

With 36k miles it should not need a timing belt change. Have you taken the cover off and looked at it to see if it is cracked or anything? It has had all scheduled maintenance done ON TIME at the dealer?

It also doesn't make sense that the independent mechanic is more expensive than the dealer INCLUDING the oil flush.

I might suggest taking it to another dealership if there are any in the immediate area.

Tech maybe able to help more.

The VVT reset valve might be bad as well causing the code.
What does it look like under the oil cap?
