Front Rotor Replacment
 

I'm right in the middle of trying to replace my front rotors. I've removed the calipers and now can't seem to get the rotor off. Can I just hit it on the back with a hammer? Does it just pull off or are there screws or something holding them on? I have a 2000 model. Thanks, Carl

There is usuallyone screw with a hex or torque bolt-head patternwhich holds therotors in place.

Thanks. Do you know if the screw is in the front or the back of the Rotor? I'm not able to locate it.

I'm not able to find any sort of nut or screw, at least from the front of the rotor. I can't see the back to well. There are two small holes in the front, which appear to be screw holes, but there's no screw in either of them. In another posting, I did find some "older" models of Volvo's which had a hex nut on the front of the rotor to hold it on, but this one doesn't have one that I'm able to find. I'm not an engineer by any means but to be honest I'm not sure what is holds on the rotors, unless is the calipars in some way and after seeing that, I'm not sure I want to drive it :). Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Yeah I don't own a s40, but there isusually a screw holding the rotor. Maybethere is one on the back of it (though i dont see how there could). Try turning the steering wheel to see back there. it mightjustbestuck to the hub or clamped there? Maybe tech or some one who has change an s40's brakes can help futher. Good luck. Maybe you could take a photo of the rotor, and I might be able to tell you where it is.

I attached 2 photos of the rotor to the first posting. I'm not able to find a bolt or screw on the rotor as the picture shows. Thanks for the help

Hey,

From the picture, it looks like the bolt is missing. It should of been inone of the two holes. It is possible that the rotor is stuck, but here is a link I found that should help you.

Looks like someone left the screws out.
A couple of good taps on the rotor should loosen them.

Thanks tech. If they did, is there anything actually holding them on ? Should they have screws? That's my concern, when I look at it, I can't see what is actually holding the rotors on. The calipers sure don't. So I'm not sure why the entire rotor doesn't just come off while driving.

Well the caliper holds it some. But when you put the wheel on the tighten the lugs that holds the rotor secure.

Yeah it will be fine to drive. IMO, the screw is only thereto hold the rotor when the wheels are off.Just make sure you torque the wheels to spec:D.

What do the lug nuts go through? In other words, do they just go into the Rotor, or is there some sort of metal plate behind the rotor they go through first, which is also connected to the axle? That would address my concern about what is currently holding myrotor on. Since we think the screws are missing, I've been concerned nothing is actually holding the rotors to the wheel axle.

The lugs attach to the hub itself.
They are pressed into the hub.

You were correct, no screws, not nutsor bolts. Just had to really hit it with a small sledge hammer after spraying down with liquid wrench. It popped right off. The only thing holding the rotor on was lug nuts.

I'm attaching pictures of the hub assembly and the rotor to show what it looked like onceremoved.
