help swapping a B4184S3 to B4194T or B4204S

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking into all information I can found regarding swapping the B418 engine to a B419 or B420 if that one is more compatible.

It's regarding a 2002 Volvo S40 1.8 (not the 1.8i)
I know volvo changed a lot of sensors over the years even in the same engine range.

I know how engine swaps work, just not what I need for volvo, the B4194T cars weren't sold here, but the parts are easy to import.

What is compatible? Do I need to replace the complete 1.8 interior harness with the 1.9 version? are the engine mounts compatible? how about the driveshafts or the wheel hubs?

Do I need to take a 2002 version B4204S or can I take the 2000 version of the B4194T? I did hear something about using the B419/B420 harness but replace it with B418 sensors?

For the exhaust, can I shop around for a S40 T4 exhaust system for the same years or won't that fit? because there are no exhaust systems for the stock 1.8

What is easier to make it the most "stock" and compatible?

Volvo didn't bring the 1.8s and 1.9s to the US (here the Gen1s came in starting in 2000 - all with the 4204Ts ). I suspect all the NA engines share the same white block design and just vary the stroke/bore. Assuming you want to replace your NA engine with another NA you'd have to decide if you want to swap in the newer fuel delivery design or stick with your old. In terms of exhaust, there's a difference between the Turbo and NA downpipe (header to CAT part of the exhaust) but I'd think that would be an easy fabrication. Its hard to say what's easier without knowing your objective. Are you trying to replace the block for something newer/more powerful or are you trying to upgrade the fuel system to something more reliable/maintainable? The wiring harness and tubing is less complex for the NAs but that may not fit your goals.
