RE: How do you change the oil on a 2000 s40?

I have the same car and have done it many times, so I will try to remember step by step. I will do this not to insult you, but assume you have never done it.
You will need:
[ul][*]15,16,or 17 mm wrench (I forget and take them all under with me)[*]5.5 quart of 5W-30 oil, I prefer full synthetic for my turbo[*]new filter element, this car has a plastic can as a housing, you only change the element, make sure you get a new o-ring, should come with element[*]filter can wrench, I believe it is an 84mm, you can buy them on ebay for about $10, get the metal one, some people use strap wrench but this may damage plastic can[*]a torque wrench that reads 25 newton meters if possible, not necessary[*]new drain plug and seal ring[*]drain pan[/ul]
I like to do mine when it is cold, but not necessary.

[ol][*]Put a board or something in front of and behind one of the wheels to prevent accidental rolling.[*]In the center of the oil pan, facing toward the rear, is a horizontal plug, remove plug with wrench[*]Let oil drain into pan[*]While draining, remove filter case with 84mm wrench, element will stay on car, just pull straight down[*]Remove o-ring from outside of cannister, clean cannister inside and groove where o-ring sits[*]Wipe the area where cannister mounts to car and push on new element. The element can go either way, no top.[*]Put new o-ring on cannister and lubricate with some new oil on your finger, fill cannister about 1/3 full with new oil, and carefully screw fast to car. If you have a torque wrench great, go to 25nm, if not just snug it up. Do not make it over tight, it is just plastic.[*]Allow the oil to drain as long as your patience can last. I wait until there is a very slow drip. When at this point, install new drain plug and seal ring. Again, snug it up, do not overtighten. Wipe off excess oil from pan.[*]On top of the engine, you will find a big black cap, remove cap and pour 5 quart of new oil in.[*]Put cap back on and run car for a few minutes.[*]Turn it off and wait a few minutes. In the front of the engine is a dipstick, the top should be orange. Pull it out, wipe it off, stick it back in, remove it and read the bottom of the stick. Oil should be around the bottom of the two marks. Now add more oil until level is toward the top of the marks. Do not overfill. Usually 5.5 qt will put it toward the top, but still within the two marks.[*]Clean up and you are done.[/ol]
The nice thing is with the oil containers now, the one side has a clear stripe to show how much is left. When you have 1/2 quart left, you can use it next time. It works out everytime for me.

I hope I remembered everything. I ran through it in my mind several times. If someone knows something I missed, PLEASE add.
