Long crank to start, rough idle and CEL P0015
Hi all,
I've been having problems with starting up for awhile. 90% of the time, when I start the car, it cranks for quite abit before starting. Sometimes even though it starts up, the idle will be at a very low RPM with the CEL on for a few seconds, and then it returns to normal idle and the CEL goes off.
However, just a few days ago, the CEL stayed on. I pulled the generic code and P0015 came up. Checked out the code and it points to a over-retarded variable camshaft timing. Read up abit and it says that its either my camshaft timing's out, variable camshaft timing solenoid is stuck open, vct unit is faulty, continous oil flow to piston chamber or camshaft advance mechanism is binding. I have a rough idea they are talking about, but have no idea how to go about fixing it. How should I go about it? Any way I can try and diagnose the problem before bringing it in to the dealer's?

RE: Long crank to start and CEL P0015
Hi there,
My volvo dealer said that its an ECM61 permanent fault code. He gave me 3 steps. First, to check camshaft timing, which costs $211. If that doesn't solve it, change the camshaft position sensor, parts and labour costing $317. If still unable, change the camshaft reset valve(i think that's what he said), which cost about 300 i think.
I'm asking him to go ahead and check the timing first. Just want to check out with you experts to see if these are the steps normally taken and if I've been quoted fairly. Thanks!!

All right heres the update. The mechanic called and said they checked the cams and all and everythings ok. They are going to go ahead and change the camshaft position sensor. Also, he said that they found the fuel pressure regulator is not working too good and they're changing that too, and that make fix the long cranking problem. Total cost: $700.
I'm just gonna let him fix all that up since the car's already in the workshop and I want it all settled. Just want to find out if thats a reasonable price I'm paying so that I'll know if I can trust this mechanic.
Thanks for the replies!
