Loss of power, 2000 S40 1.9T

About a year ago I had a bad puff of greyish smoke coming from my exhaust right after an oil change at the dealership. It was especially bad at idle but stopped after about 20 min. About two weeks ago my wife took it out and had a terrible experience much like the first time only it lasted for an hour as she drove home. The next day I took it out and found the same thing. When I pressed gave it gas, it acted like it had no power and I heard a brief knocking. The next day it was fine. Last week it happened again. I went to the dealer and they thought it may be a head gasket but thought maybe not since it comes and goes. Naturally it was fine when the dealer looked at it. Ever since I have not seen any smoke although it seems that since this experience I have had a loss power, almost like the turbo is gone. I changed the plugs, no difference.

Fuel filter? Loss of compression/head gasket issue? I have never had the check engine come on (for this at least). Tech, any ideas?

Thanks all!

Vaccum leaks anywhere?
Maybe an oil line is clogged?

Tech, I changed the fuel filter for kicks but no difference. I don't know anything about checking the vaccum. What's the best way to go about it/where to look? Is this something beyond what an 'amature mechanic' can do or should I let the dealer take it from here? I'm willing to try. Thanks for you help.

Get a can of either Carb. or brake clean. With the car running spray all the vaccum lines. If the idle changes you have a leak look closely.
